My draft is tomorrow night and I have spent the past week running through mock drafts trying to get an idea for how the draft might go.  Of course, you never know, but I'm hoping to get a general gauge of what players should be available.  My leage is a 10 team yahoo H2H league (daily) that has been running for 11 years now.  Everyone is pretty knowledgable and I have never won the league, 4 2nd place finishes.

I am targeting Durant with pick number 2.  I am really leaning towards punting dimes b/c of the scarcity of that stat.  It seems to set up really well with Durant as well.  Here are a couple observations and I'm hoping you all can tell me if I'm on the right track:

- There is a decision to make with my 2nd/3rd round picks:  Do I take my PG now?  If Jennings is available, I think this might be the right call since he fits pretty well into the punt assists setup.  The next several rounds I'll be targeting guys that are generally going later in the draft anyway.  Punting Assists jumps them up my board (Ersan, Gortat, Matthews, Pekovic).  If I don't go PG in rounds 2 or 3, I'm waiting on Jeff Teague a few rounds, but jumping on him earlier than his ADP b/c if I miss him, I'm not looking very good at that position.  Would you go Jennings (if available) in round 2/3 or wait for Teague?  Is this even making sense? :)

- How many PG's should I carry in a punt dimes setup?  I'm thinking only 2.  Can I just roll with one?

- We have 3 bench spots in my league and I'm generally ending the draft with guys like Hayward, Hill, Wright, etc...  I'm taking Hill for his position (PG), Hayward for his all around game, and Wright for some possible upside.  Should I be targeting other players with more "upside"?  If so, who?

- Ibaka seems to be available with my round 3 pick every so often, is that a slam dunk pick?  Seems like my decision there is going to come down to 2 out of Horford, Ibaka, and Jennings most of the time.  If that is the 3, who do you take?

I'm hoping to generate discussion on this strategy with Durant as the key.  While also gaining to insight into whether or not I'm on the right track for my H2H league.

Durant is an excellent well rounded player.  You don't need to plan on punting anything if you draft Durant.  With the exception of a few players (Dwight Howard notably), you really shouldn't be executing or developing a punt strategy until your core players are drafted, which is about after round four.  What happens if Ty Lawson is available to you at 19?  You take him.

You definitely want two PGs, usually 3 of each eligible position (since many players have multiple position eligibility).

Focus in on grabbing PGs that are projected to average 4 or fewer assists, I'd be targetting in the much later rounds Hill, Lou Williams, Stuckey or Terry.

Joined a public league last night just to fill up my 8th league for fun. Ended up with Durant and punted assists. Of course this is only possible in a public league. In a good league, this is impossible LOL.

Only drafted Asik there in the last round to trade him. Doesn't fit with my team at all and can easily drop him if it's too hard to trade in a public league

@bruin99, I know that one should not plan to punt any category, but after many mocks, it really seems as though, most times it ends up be a pretty solid option with Durant.  So you think I can just wait until the end to address PG in most cases?  Interesting, I guess I have been worried about waiting too long to grab someone.  I'll give that strategy a shot if/when the punting option presents itself.

One more thing, since it is a H2H league, doesn't punting make more sense than it would in a Roto format?  If I'm only punting Assists, which is historically a challenging stat, shouldn't that create an advantage potentially?

Are you sure that Durant is going to make it to pick #2? More often than not I've seen Durant going #1 which would change your scenario if you had LBJ. Assuming you do have Durant though I would definitely not be looking to reach for jennings early on. There are too many decent PG;s later on that you can get without reaching early.

There aren't tons of then, but I would look to find some players that are PG/SG elgible. This helps you manuvering weekly and will leave you will scorers instead of passers.

@DMWave - Believe me, that is something I'm strongly considering.  The real bummer has been I have been unable to find a Mock where Lebron doesn't go first.  I think I've done 20 or so mocks and Durant is always my pick at 2.  I think I'm going to do a mock with the first pick to see what my plan will be with Lebron if he is there at 2 instead of Durant.

I had #2 pick. Did a few mocks... 75%-80% durant went second.

And in my real draft, durant went second. I punted asts.

I would try another mock taking #1 overall. If you are in a competitive league, its going to be VERY difficult to pull that off again. was there a lot of auto picks in the mock or something? Because if you got that team in a real league, you are in good shape! (although i would have exchanged kawhi leonard for a brook lopez if that would have been possible)

2nd look at a Lebron mock.  I didn't like this one.  Next time I'll go either Horford or Milsap, but not both.  It is interesting to see how different the drafts are for Lebron and Durant.  I'm not even going to touch on CP3.

Just finished my draft.  I think I did pretty well.  Certainly some changes from the mocks at the end of the draft.  No Hill or Hayward around so I ended up with CJ Miles, but I think I can cover his FG%.

Who else is out there for end of the bench besides Dorell? You are already strong in 3PM and TO without him.

I took Dorell on the off chance that he can keep up his stellar pre-season play.  And because my other targets went quickly before I picked (Hill and Hayward).

@mrfuentes27 - I sure hope Leonard performs as well, but I feel pretty good about him.  He gives me that Battier feeling.  Overlooked and always contributing across the board.

@mbuser - What do you think about this idea, I drop Dorrell and CJ and pick up Jamal Crawford and Luke Ridnour?

It hurts my overall team value, but it creates a very balanced team that can compete in all cats.

Here are my projected standings after the change

1st place - 77 pts and my biggest weakness is at AST where I am projected to finish with a 5.  10 (FG%, FT%, BLK, STL), 9 (TO), 8(3PM,REB), 7 (PTS).

The next best total is 60.  How useful is the projected standing measurement for H2H?

I'm fine with the changes because it doesn't seem that you'll be hurting for useful FA options at any point. You are right, that is good balance. The projected standings tool is at least useful enough to know that your team is excellent compared to everyone else's.
