So I am always boggled at Rondo's worth. People draft him as early as rounds 1-2 and he is routinely ranked oh so low on BBM

I'm looking even at last night's line and he's ranked 13th overall in 9 category leagues, even below his teammate Barbosa

What's so flawed about his statline?

20 pts, 7 rebs, 13 asts, 64%FG, 50%FT, 4 TOs

Were the FT% and TOs enough to knock him down that much? (I'm assuming this is the answer but I didn't realize the penalty on those 2 categories would be so harsh to a player's overall worth)

Is it the fact he needed 43 minutes to accumulate those stats?

I'd say threes and ft% is what hurts his rank.  At his position, you need those stats.  Same reason why he's suited for a punt ft% strat (jsmoove, Howard, griffin build)

An average player in a 12x13 league gets you about 14.5 points, 1 3, 6 reb, 3 asst, 1.2 stl, 0.8 blck, 47% fg, 78% ft and 2 TOs.

rondo had a nice statline last night, but if you look at his averages his positives are 4x the amount of assists and about 50% more steals.  But he scores 20% less, gets no 3s, no blocks, ft% is closer to 50%, and almost double the number of TOs.  All those negatives aren't worth 9 more assists for a 2nd round pick

According to Phan and Buser on numerous occasions in years past, Rondo has always been a 2 category guy only helping you in Assists and Steals.  People watch the games on primetime and Sunday when he puts up the Triple Doubles and get excited, but they don't see how he hurts you in all the other categories.  He shoots terrible percentages esp. from the FT line (61.8% Career) and does not shoot 3's (63 total in his 6 year career).  A good point guard will help you at least in Asts, Steals, shoot a good FT%, and make 1-3 3's/game.  There was a reason Coach K and Team USA cut him from the World Championship Squad (or he quit due to lack of PT, can't remember).  He's a dynamic playmaker and plays great D, but he's such a liability at the Free Throw line and other areas.  I stay away from him and let others take him.

His FG% slipped all the way to 45% last season, as well.

Sure, lots of AST and STL, but that line from last season reflects seven negatives, four of which have to be considered major.

I see, thanks for the advice guys!

It just blew my mind that despite the gaudy statline, it wasn't enough to be a top 10 player on a night when only 6 teams played

Heck, even Barbosa finished with a higher rank for 10/30/12 but I guess he did contribute with 3 triples, and higher FG%

I posted a message about Rondo in the projections thread, but just came across this thread as well.  I'm projecting that Rondo's FT% increases by about 5% this season (from a career 62% to 67 or 68%).  He shot 70% during the playoffs and 78% in preseason, so I think my assumption is reasonable.  That small adjustment does make a big difference in Rondo's rank, especially if you are in an 8-cat H2H league.   Also, I think he takes a couple extra field goal attempts this season.  So, we're talking about one of the best in the NBA with assists and steals, average in points, FG%, and boards - while only negative in 3s (he did attempt 2 last night and had a couple during last year's playoffs as well but its not unreasonable think he could avg 0.5 3PG) and FT% (closer to 70% still is bad for a PG but its not insurmountable to overcome).   I think the hate has gone too far on him and predict he'll finish in the top 20 in 8 cat league rankings.

Nobody "hates" Rondo. He is simply not a top 40 type overall asset. I hate Rondo's ADP not the player.

^ Agreed, and the "hate" is usually reserved for 9-cat.

But there is also an irony here - Rondo is the only one with overrated X as far as I saw (there may be others, just haven't noticed), yet Dwight goes first round in many drafts.

This is not a criticism of Dwight as such - my point is that if you have a guy like Rondo, you need a plan ... like the Cylons had.

In an even league, with a good plan, a Rondo/Griffen/Howard can be worth their weight in gold

Big difference here.  When you exclude FT% with Howard, he becomes the #1 player in fantasy.  When you exclude any 1 of Rondo's weaknesses (3s, FT% or TOs), he is still at best a 5th round player.  Yet he's drafted 2nd/3rd round.  When you exclude all of Rondo's weaknesses (points, 3s, FT%, TOs) he was still only #9 last year.
