Are you kidding me??? 10 mill. per year for him????? After insane contract to Fields now this move?
The Raptors and DeMar DeRozan have reportedly agreed to a four-year, $40 million contract extension.
Toronto is already paying Landry Fields $6.3 million per year through the 2014-15 season, and this contract is pretty rich for a guy whose scoring (16.7), FG percentage (42.2 percent), rebounding (3.3), steals (0.8) and blocks (0.3) alldeclined last year, in his third NBA season 0% Agree (0 votes) |

Ty Lawson, $12 million/year.
DeRozan, $10 million/year.
Who would you rather have?

"How do you not let him become a restricted free agent?" They fear somebody will offer him 15 per year
"This is why they are the Raptors, horrendous contract." horrendous contractS-plural.

the raps take two steps forward (val, lowry) and two steps back (derozen, fields)

The Raptors have a star identification problem. They realize they have to overpay to keep/get any player. TMac, Vince, Bosh all left Toronto as superstars. Now Toronto seems gunshy on letting any player go no matter how average. U would think Hedo taught this franchise a lesson. They at least paid him AFTER he had 1 great season in Orlando. Now they are paying Bargs, Landry Fields, Demarr before they have great seasons? I pity Toronto fans. Rock bottom seems to be the only button on the Toronto elevator.

hailfire, sorry but i need to correct you on a few things.
TMac left BEFORE he was a superstar. Vince resigned AS a superstar. Bosh resigned AS a star (wouldnt call him superstar at that point). Yes, all three did leave, and it hasent been roses for the raps in attractive big talent, but vince and bosh did at one point in time sign on the doted line as a raptor. But let's also look at the recent guys you mentioned...
Hedo - Colangelo's ego to make a big splash during free agency, and hedo did come off a very successful playoff run. Terrible move by colangelo, but that was the reason regardless.
Fields - Done just to try to screw knicks so the raps could get nash, which was almost purely done for a PR and business reason (in terms of getting nash). Terrible basketball decision, but regardless, that was the reason.
Bargs - Colegenlos big first overall pick. He is desperate to make bargs work out. Again..ego.
Derozen - This one was just damn confusing. No idea what the heck that was all about.
So its important to understand the issue for each of these guys, and for the most part, it was not to overpay to keep/get any player, but colangelo just making flat out bad decisions.
And rock bottom? Well, I wouldnt be happy with a annual middle of the road team, but the raps are CERTAINLY better then rock bottom. Val is the real deal (but still raw). Lowry is the best point guard they have had since alvin willaims. They have a good bench. A good coach. They will be fighting for the 8th spot this year.
Ideal? No, of course not. But rock bottom is the Bobcats. The raptors are not the bobcats.

As a Raptor fan, I have to agree with the above comments - signing DeRozan was completely confusing. I would think they would have the same opportunity AFTER the season as well.
DeRozan has always showed signs of starter legitimacy, but it's only always been signs - never any consistency. Having him play for a contract this year would truly make him hungry - and I'm afraid that Demar will continue to be hesitant now that he's thinking about the next 4 years versus fighting for a contract.
Hopefully I'm wrong!

the sad thing was that last night, not to say he was having a great game prior, but when the raps needed a basket, he had a few chances to take over and show that he had taken that next step. The raptors were the better team last night, but they showed both inexperience and nerves, and the lack of a closer, during that final five minutes. Derozen had a chance to show some signs of being that guy, and came up short.
it was just game one...so I am not ready to close the book on the guy, but regardless, worst colangelo move since hedo. IF the raps got derozen for 8 mil a year....maybe.
