Someone drafted Calderon in my league and is holding onto him whether or Lowry plays.  I would've definitely picked him up short term otherwise and then waive him as soon Lowry came back.

Guys, relax, its an ankle sprain, probably the most common injury for basketball players. The only question here is if it a low sprain or a high sprain, its not like he sought a second opinion because he broke his foot. We have to look at this in a worst case scenario point of view now until we hear otherwise. Even if he sits for three more weeks, he will certainly be back to full strength by then, and anything before that is bonus.

is it really common to seek a 2nd opinion even if you only sprain your ankle?

avatarCap. (518 posts)  11/15/2012 9:56 AM

I can't imagine the Raptors' primary physician would diagnose an ankle sprain when it's really a broken foot.  I wouldn't worry about it too much, some sprains take a while to heal.  Plan to be without him for another 2-3 more weeks and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

what do you guys think? lowry has missed games a few years in a row, and his style of play is great for fantasy..but bad for being an injury risk.

You guys think he will be good to go the rest of the year? is he to much of an injury risk at this stage?

avatarmisterjwei@yahoo.com (27 posts)  11/15/2012 12:12 PM

He is definately a injury risk with the way he plays.  But I think if he is healthy durry end of the year, he will be the type of player thats on many championship teams.  He is putting up crazy numbers.  If he can come back full healthy, I think he is worth waiting reguardless the time frame.

Lowry is targeting a return in late November, but the Raptors PR department tweeted that it's "hard to speculate" on how long he'll be out. It's a wait-and-see process with how Lowry responds to treatment, but Jose Calderon should continue to roll while Lowry is hurt. Nov 19 - 8:17 AM

>> This is starting to sound worse and worse.  Anyone else feel the raptors are just sitting Lowry and trying to showcase calderon as much as possible?

avatarmbuser (4317 posts)  11/19/2012 3:21 PM

There definitely could be something to that. Lowry is a major part of their future, so no reason to rush him, and Calderon is their one big trade chip, so heavy motivation to get him run while it is possible.

Trade Value, Up, Up & AWAY! Jose Calderon averaging 11.8 APG since Lowry went down.

Here is a report from the team from five days ago:

Injury Update: Kyle Lowry, bruised cuboid bone on right foot, estimated return 1-2 wks. Currently in walking boot

In Lowry's case, he's coming back before anyone expected. Nobody in the biz is looking to purposefully misinform, but hopefully anything that is pure speculation is labeled as such.

With his recent injury struggles, do you think he will keep playing late into the season if the team is still this bad?  Lowry was reported saying his foot is sore and its still bruised but he will play through it.  And I dont mind him missing a few weeks here or there, but anyway the team just shut him down completely in march and say lets go full blown tank mode?

avatarmbuser (4317 posts)  12/9/2012 2:43 PM

Your hypothetical assumes they'd allow him to play through pain for the next 2.5 months, which would be pure instanity. He's going to play through it because it's not expected to cost him in the long-term - if it doesn't improve within a reasonable length of time or he aggravates it yet again, he'll be rested.

People don't get shut down (w/o legitimate injury that will keep them out quite a while) in mid-December for the rest of the season.  It's an injury, and he is proving to be injury prone, but come on people stop with the gross overreactions.  Maybe the injury is serious, we don't know yet (although it doesn't sound like it to me...), but if it isn't then Lowry will be back when he's healthy.

The Raps aren't going to sit Lowry for 3/4ths of the season when he's healthy enough to be playing.  Especially since 1) he's a big piece of their future still, and they'd likely like to have their other pieces get as much chemistry with him as possible, and 2) It's not like they are winning games with him in the lineup anyways.

From the Raptors Twitter feed:

Lowry: partial tear, right triceps. Expected out 10 days. Bargnani: ligament tear, right elbow & strained right wrist. Out indefinitely.

Looking at the Schedules back for the Dec 26th game against the Spurs. That's one week I won't have him. No big deal. This week sucks though.

Kyle Lowry may return to a bench role... That would not be good for us!!! unless he maintains his minutes and touches, but unlikely...

Raptors coach Dwane Casey would not rule out sticking with what is working when Kyle Lowry and former first-overall selection Andrea Bargnani return from injury. 'That's way down the road. Jose is playing at a high level right now and we'll cross that bridge later. Kyle is a talented player, he's one of ours and we'll cross that bridge. I don't want to do anything that will hurt our chemistry and I don't think Kyle will, but we'll see when we get there.'

No news of when he would come back, also... way down the road? I was hoping in a week!

Lowry is this team's future at the point, and Calderon is an outgoing trade asset. I don't see that move lasting more than a few games, if it were to be tried at all. Casey does need some wins to stabilize his employment, though..

this is getting pretty frustrating. i drafted lowry in rd 4 thinking i got a steal, possibly a top 30 fantasy player. i know his ranking is still high but he simply hasn't been getting it done lately -- mainly due to lack of minutes. This calderon/lowry situation is really pissing me off, and it seems calderson has officially taken over the role for the Toronto Raports pg (both the starter and the one to play 30+ minutes).

Mbuser, your thoughts on this changing? Is lowry a lost cause? He is/was so vital to my team, and it makes it especially frustrating knowing what he is capable of when given minutes.

I love what Calderon has been doing, but Lowry's a better player and the Raptors gave up a lot to make him the man. Jose's not the future

Bottom line is Lowry needs to find a balance, play with it and prove what on paper is true: He is the better PG and should be the starter

A lost cause? No. All I can do is tell you to be patient. The only other option is to trade him and then watch him do really well for someone else's team down the stretch.

And he is down again...not even 10 days this guy cant stay injury free... 3rd year running.

Kyle Lowry suffered a sprained left ankle and had just two points at halftime on Tuesday, and was briefly ruled out for the second half before blowing up in the fourth quarter in a surprising return to action.
After receiving treatment he said he felt well enough to play in the fourth quarter, and he exploded for 19 points and four 3-pointers in the final stanza, finishing with 21 points in just 15 minutes of action. The bad news is that he was in a great deal of pain after the game and doesn't sound all that likely to play on Wednesday against the Bulls. Jose Calderon is averaging 16 points on 60 percent shooting, with 7.5 assists and zero turnovers over his last four games, so don't expect Lowry to steal his job any time soon. Also, don't expect Lowry to play on Wednesday, but keep in mind he somehow found a way to fight through the injury tonight.

In any of the 8 leagues I do not have Lowry (neither I'm Raptors fan) I dont have a reason to be happy or sad/angry bc of his status, if he miss one game or next 2 seasons=wouldnt have any affect on me, just stating the obvious-he cant stay healthy, thats all.

Wow! This trade is great news considering that I have Lowry on about 20 of my 30 fantasy teams. applausedancing bananatazthumbs uproflbig smilecheerleaderold guylolhammer

And now for Kyle Lowry BEAST MODE rest of the season. (Get on my hands and knees and pray to God that he says injury free)

Should I trade Ty Lawson for Kyle Lowry?

Ask yourself, do you feel lucky? Punk. Well, do ya? Lawson = Safer, probably less of a chance he finishes the rest of the season as a top 8 player. Lowry = Riskier, but could be an animal down the stretch IF HE CAN STAY HEALTHY.

So....Lowry has been mediocre since the trade. Does Gay really affect the TOR offense that much? I thought I was so smart picking Houston's 2011-2012 PG combo of Dragic and Lowry at value prices. Both have been disappointing this season.

They've replaced a gaggle of role players with one of the league's higest usage rates, so there will most certainly be an adjustment process.

There are too many shooters on the Rapters for Lowry to shine as bright as early in the year.  Gay fires them up at alarming rate, DeRozen, Anderson, Bargani (wait he's injured again), who else.  Watched the game vs. LA and saw Lowry be successful in the clutch driving into the lane to get it to OT on FT's but they don't go to him.  He may take a 3 but they go to guys like Anderson, Gay, and maybe DeRozen.  He needs to hit those uncontested 3's and get more points in the paint but maybe he's limitted (not Tony Parker or even a skilled speedster).  It is interesting that he doesn't play more than 30 minutes on average. Interesting to see how Lucas seems to score a bit easier than him somehow.

Yes, his usage% is way down. At least the rest of the counting stats have stayed solid. Gay is in league-leading usage% territory since he arrived:

Absolutely brutal stretch for KLOE recently. Consistent steals and blocks make him hard to drop but he looks to be turning into  a FG% killer with little upside in points or threes post-Rudy. How are people ranking him for next year?

He would not be on any of my list. With DRZ & Gay he have no room to be nowhere close what he can really do (to put his FG% a side).

Sure a brutal stretch these past three games, highlighted by today's stinker. But here's his numbers from Rudy Gay's other 16 games with the Raptors.

Obviously he's not going to be the elite contributor that he's been, but I doubt he'll need to be stricken from your draft boards.
