I have been fading Kobe Bryant all season on Fan Duel. I actually haven't picked him once to date and I agreed with the model that he was playing way above expectation and shooting a career fg%, but the time as come to ask if he shouldn't be projected at least a few points higher. 0% Agree (0 votes) |

I would think that his usage will continue to be exceptionally high until Steve Nash gets back, and from there things will settle down. In two games since our last projections update, he's averaged 43 mpg, 24 FGA, and 12 FTA. I've bumped up his FTA/g and 3PA/g to get closer to his season averages.

Hi Matt,
Again bringing up an old post.... Where do you see Kobe numbers settle once Nash returns? Do you think his FG% will improve, less TO?

Perhaps this is not directly related but I see a lot of blame being thrown around in L.A. by the media and even Kobe himself at guys like Pau and Dwight. I say that Kobe has to take a good chunk of that, I mean the guy took 41 shots yesterday. 41! What need is there for anyone to take that many shots? Pau & Dwight took 19 combined and they eeked out a 1 point overtime victory with Nash in tow. If they had lost there would have been a lot of fingerpointing going on. All I know is that the Lakers would not be 13-14 if they had Durant or Lebron instead of Kobe. Think about it.
0% Agree (0 votes) |
It's not as though he's chucking them up there, he's shooting a pretty efficient percentage of shots. Any team would be better off with Lebron or Durant there, but if you take Kobe's contributions into account, I don't know how he can take the blame for scoring at a high clip, with excellent efficiency.
Even if Dwight is the centrepiece of the lakers team, Kobe is still the best player, and with the way Dwight's playing, I don't see much use in giving him the reigns.

My point is that maybe he should get them more involved instead of having the others stand around while he does his dance. Dwight and Pau may as well not even play for the Lakers, they'd be better off with other players that fit that style.

I'd been thinking that this guy would slow down after going on his run to shut people up but he's been ridonk lately. Perhaps it's the D'Antoni system, he could be in for a crazy year.

And the longer LAL's spiral continues, the more likely Kobe reverts to his hero-ball, I'm just gonna get mine, chucker mode. You knew it had to come eventually...

Matt,
Are we changing Kobe's projections?? There's no way he's going to average 28 points a game but his efficiency is i'm sure at the top of list right now.
I have an 11 cat league focused on offense and i've been the best offensive team in the league, hence, first in the league for almost the whole season. If Kobe's game changes, I need to see what changes I need to make. Thanks.

I think its too soon to do much with his projections. Its still Kobe we're talking about here the assists are nice (especially paired with Ws) but I would be hesitant to call this a lasting trend (I could be proven wrong tho)

You may (or may not) have noticed that his projections were adjusted yesterday to reflect at least a slight change in philosophy (shall we say). Agreed with KingKobe, though, it's a bit early to do too much with him.

He plays through so many injuries it's insane, not to mention his production while dealing with myriad injuries. He calls guys out when they are hurt and tells them not to be a wuss but I don't think he realizes that others are not built like cyborgs the way he is. I would say that he is the toughest player in the NBA. Anyone care to disagree? 100% Agree (1 vote) |
Great player but I'm actually a little skeptical about the severity of some of Kobe's Injuries. I think there's been a few that he plays up and then acts like he's toughing out more then the average player. There's just been a lotta of inconsistencies with some injuries and what he's said is up with himself, like that ligament injury in his shooting arm last season.
50% Agree (2 votes) |
I also think Kobe is more of a "Storyteller Warrior" than a real soldier. Don't get me wrong a lot on NBA players are pansies. I do think Kobe has played with some tweaks and pulls but nothing major. Like Ronnie Lott cutting his finger off to keep playing type. IF KObe was as tough as u bluster he is, he wouldn't cry about them in the first place.

As much as i love Kobe, I do think he plays up a lot of his injuries. BUT, you still can't deny he plays through a lot that others players wouldn't. My bigger issue is his defense...good god its been awful... I just hate when he doesn't move an inch, and instead just points at a guy thats open...ummm, Kobe, thats YOUR man!
but still...Kobe is King

I think there is a 99.999% chance of Kobe playing tomorrow. Every year he "claims" to have a bad injury will have to miss games. Then boom he miraculously gets healed and pretends to be a star. Kobe is a whiny drama queen. I am sure he has bumps and bruises but for a supposed tough guy he cries an awful lot. Its a shame the trade deadline is over. I would be trying to trade for him cheap, because I truly believe he is making it up again again again.

Seriously? You can see for yourself that his ankle rolled over the guys foot.... How can he possibly fake that?
0% Agree (0 votes) |
Wait and see if he sits then i will be wrong. If he plays then u will be wrong. This guy does this EVERY year sometimes 2 or 3 times. He is trying to recreate the "stories" of MJ shrugging off injuries illnesses before his big games. MJ didn't snivel as much as Kobe though. Seriously wait for the miracle tomorrow.
0% Agree (0 votes) |
Think this time you are wrong HF, will not claimed for sure but my guess he cant play, atleast in next few days...
0% Agree (0 votes) |
In order to be miraculous it has to appear to be serious. The NBA ain't like real sports leagues. U can downplay serious injuries, or upplay fake injuries. Heck Bogut lied for 10 months about what was really wrong with him. If Kobe is really hurt this time unlike all his other fake injuries then I will be wrong. Remember in the "Boy who cried Wolf"? Eventually he got eaten by his imaginary wolf. Maybe this 1 time Kobe's fake injury will turn out real. But until I see the little boy bones licked clean by the wolf i am assuming he is faking yet again.

HF, While I agree that players over-dramatize injuries, I respectfully submit that Kobe isn't in "playing games" mode. There certainly are players that try to garner extra attention and create storylines or narratives to attract fans and such (see Paul Pierce 2008 finals), I assure you, sir, Kobe Bryant is not one of them.
The guy injured his ankle (see youtube video of play). He wasn't playing victim or hero. Its not like he got helped off the court. In fact, he was upset that there was an injury timeout and Lakers had to sub for him and he couldn't get back in the game.
If he does play, it's not bc he faked an injury and wants to save the day. It will be bc his team, HIS team, is doing their best to make the playoffs and sustain a system that will carry them to the finals.
If he doesn't play, it will be bc the cons outweigh the pros and a game or two off would benefit him and the team in the long run.
Thank you.

Hf, I'm the farthest thing from a Kobe fan, but you're way off here. Jones undercut him, and Kobe's ankle turned. It's on film. There are photos of the swelling. You can't possibly be denying that Kobe's hurt. It's hard to know exactly how long an ankle injury will take to heal until you see how much swelling there is, but he'll clearly be impaired, and could miss a few games. If he does play, it's to his credit that he could have his ankle turn like that and be ready to go a couple days later, and that he's playing through an injury.
Considering Jalen Rose has admitted to intentionally injuring him in the NBA finals, I don't blame Kobe if he complains about Jones doing it to him again, while he's in an intense playoff race. I don't know of anyone else still in the league who has another player admitting they intentionally tried to injure him, but I'm sure you'd be pissed too if that kept happening.
100% Agree (1 vote) |
Remember Kobe's teammate Artest just last year backward elbowing Harden? THAT was an intentional violent act. Maybe this time the hypochondriac is really sick. Kobe does like to cry victim too much. It is what keeps him from being a true star outside of LA. I just wish Kobe would stop being a bawlbag. Suck it up wuss. If u are really hurt get well play again. If u ain't hurt just play. He wants it both ways. He wants to be a tough play thru pain guy, while at the same time simpering like a schoolgirl over a hangnail.

Dasein, I respect a man that goes as hard as him every night and yes that makes me a fan.
HF, really bro? Really??? "It is what keeps him from being a true star outside of LA." I 'm assuming you don't watch too many laker games. In Atlanta the other night, the fans were yelling MVP while he was shooting free throws. The man is practically a legend in China. I don't need to say much more as your argument pretty much self-destructs with the nonsense you're putting out there.
Thank you.

As a proud Kobe fanboy, I try to keep my arguments in the sensible department. Kobe definetly plays up a lot of his injuries, which I hate, but it's obvious he got hurt this time. Is he playing up how much he's hurt? Probably. Lets just say I'll be surprised if he misses more than a game or two, but not shocked if he doesn't miss any. I have in my active lineup the one place i own him. Also, Jones has a history of dirty play, and how do you get under a guy on a fadeaway without a concerted effort. Hate that guy
Hailfire: comments like the ones you're making is what makes the less rational Kobe fans start going crazy when you trash him that badly, be a little more subjective you can't deny his toughness

Kobe Bryant was seen limping badly in the Lakers' locker room after yet another loss, bothered by a bone spur in his left foot. He will be evaluated by doctors in Sacramento when the Lakers arrive there Friday, a day before they play the Kings to complete a four-game trip.

The remarkable thing is he's gone this long without a serious injury.

I don't know what is more amazing: that the Lakers will save themselves $80M in luxury taxes if they amnesty Kobe or that $80M is such a pittance to Buss that it's not a consideration.

$80M is not a pittance at all. In fact, Buss is not even one of the wealthier owners in the league anymore. However, the fallout from Laker fans if Kobe gets amnestied would be tremendous.
I guess the real issue is how soon Kobe can come back. If its gonna take him 9-12 months, I actually would be in favor of amnestying him and resigning him for the 14-15 season (please god don't strike me down)

When your TV deal alone is worth $200M per year, $80M is a pittance.
One relevant note: NBA players can't restructure contracts. Another note: after a player is amnestied, the highest bidder on the player's remaining salary through the waiver system receives the player. Obvioiusly Kobe can't be allowed to go through that process. Another note: amnestying Gasol would save the team ~$60M.

True any other team can get Kobe off of waivers, but he has only 1 year left on his contract and if he will sit out that year due to injury I can't see anyone wanting to pay 30 mil for a guy who's not gonna play. Amnestying Kobe is only a valid option if he will sit out the year, then signing a new contract with the Lakers (I believe he can do that since he will be a free agent no?)
Amnestying Gasol is not as good of an option because you can definetly get something back for him even if its not equal value (but again if Kobe is missing significant time I don't see how you trade Gasol unless you're writing off the entire season.
On the TV deal, how much of that money goes to revenue sharing (not a rhetorical question I actually would like to know)?

Teams don't have to pay a player's entire salary, they simply place a bid for the player (up to the full salary) and the high bidder wins. So the high bid would clearly be less than $30M and, whether he sits out the year or not, he would most certainly end up on another team's roster for the season.
The Lakers are assumed to be the "league leader" in revenue sharing, at around $50M annually.

I don't think that Kobe or Gasol are going anywhere. Those are just some pretty eye-catching numbers

I don't see Kobe getting amnestied; however I am very much rooting for it to happen, because:
a) The combination of amnesty, can-he-come-back-from-injury, and is-he-to-old stories might cause him to actually explode - literally.
b) After the inevitable (and probably accurate) it-was-Dwight rumors, watching Kobe try to score 100 in a game against the Lakers, solely by dunking on D12, would be massively entertaining.
c) I would unquestionably watch a two hour reality-TV style special covering each of the teams preparation for their bid. It could be titled "The Auction."
d) Although I realize this would never happen, a live-bid, televised Kobe amnesty auction would be about the greatest non-game basketball TV ever.
e) Just knowing which team would win and what they bid would be fascinating.
So, never going to happen, but would be pretty fun!
