Thoughts on Monroe this year? I think he did a lot to establish himself as a very valuable player in a variety of formats last year. Will he continue to produce? Will he have minutes issues again? Will Drummond have any effect on his production?

I don't think I'll ever count on Greg for 1bpg, but if he gives me 3apg and 1.6 spg I'll be very happy.

Pretty likely he takes another step. He's only 22. Their frontcourt is weak. I don't see why Monroe can't play 34 minutes a game this year.

I don't think Drummond will have much impact this year and I don't think he's gonna be a good NBA player. He'll likely be in foul trouble a lot too.

Their other bigs are Jason Maxiell & Charlie V so yeah he should be playing at least 34 minutes.

Worth taking a chance on the upside where he's going if he can turn in a full season like 11-12's first half, or better (24th in per-game):

33 min, 16.8 pts, 51% FG, 78% FT, 10.1 reb, 2.5 ast, 2.5 to, 1.3 stl, 0.6 blk

He fell to 65th the rest of the way:

30 min, 13.6 pts, 54% FG, 68% FT, 9.1 reb, 2 ast, 2.3 to, 1.2 stl, 0.8 blk

Matt has already heard this from me, but I'll put it here just to provide some contrast...

I don't think Monroe is all that good an nba player.  He's a bit of a Lee/AlJeff/TMurphy type who puts up numbers without being as good as his box score looks.  Guys like that can be huge in fantasy... every player I just named has had good or even great fantasy seasons somewhere along the way.  But sometimes they fall out of favor and start losing opportunity.

This could be a great year for Monroe, but I wouldn't be surprised if he only goes 30mins a game for the rest of his career.

wow moose, way to send me crashing back to earth.

I agree on your assesment of Monroe as a Lee/AlJeff type, but I wonder how much of that is because of their perceived softness (whether warranted or not). I'm not ready to say I agree that he isn't all that good an NBA player, post players with his passing skills and cerebral approach can be effective even if they're not true post bruisers/bangers/paint defenders IMO.

I've kind of had this dream that Monroe was going to become Pau with the stls/blks numbers flip flopped. Is that too much? Maybe Al Horford with the same steal/block swap?

Saw this on Rotoworld today. I think Monroe's injury may be directly related to Floppymoose's comment here.big smile

Greg Monroe is dealing with a sore middle finger on his right hand.

He doesn't know how he did it, but has it wrapped up

It sounds like the Pistons are moving Monroe to PF sooner rather than later.  That's good news for Monroe's real, and fantasy, career.  He is not a capable center.  He'll have to become a PF to have a positive impact on the game.

I have Monroe rated pretty high. I drafted him 1st pick in the 3rd round passing over a lot of other legitimate Centers. I passed over Marc Gasol, Hibbtert, Stoudemire, Griffin, David Lee, and Marcin Gortat to name a few.

I am completely banking on a progression from last year. Am I rating him too high?

I'm certainly comfortable taking him ahead of that group, although pick 25 would be as early as I'd consider him. I'm on board with a big year in any case. See my post above.

He's a hard worker.  Only thing that seems to be a problem for him is that he is not very athletic and gets his shots blocked easily by similar big men.  If he moves to PF like an early poster was saying, then maybe he gets blocked less.  I personally think Andre Drummond has proven alot of people wrong even though it's only preseason (including myself).  His rebounding is good and is a fast learner.  With him manning the center spot by mid season, maxiell can finally be moved back to the bench where he belongs.  I like watching the guy but he's not tall enough or skilled enough to play major PF minutes in the NBA.

So far it looks like Monroe is making me eat my words.  Not about being a good fantasy option: I thought that might happen anyway. But about putting up empty numbers.  So far the PIstons are playing better defense with him on the court than off.

Solid line last night until you look at TO's: .667 fg%, 12 pts, 11 rebs, 3 ast, 2 stl, 7 TO.

7 TO from a center is about the most unbearable thing I can imagine.

In the end he was #56, largely on the strength of his durability.  per-game he was #81.

Monroe is just not all that.

Another step down in efficiency, this one pretty substantial. That's not going to cut it.
