Bynum will not be a contact participant for the first three weeks of camp because the knee treatment he recently received in Germany left him with a (minor) bone bruise. This is not expected to affect his regular season.

Here's how @SpearsNBAYahoo worded it:

Sixers sitting out center Andrew Bynum for three weeks to maximize the therapeutic medical effects used to aid a right knee bone bruise.

Hmm...I was hoping I could get more looks of him in preseason before my drafts but I guess that won't happen. Good thing that "this is not expected to affect his regular season".

Bynum knee injury potentially more serious link

Granted, there have been no official updates to suggest that this is a larger problem, but I must admit that I've been surprised to see Bynum's ADP stay firmly in the middle of Rd1 with no real concerns about possible longer-term issues.

Agreed mbuser. I'm not sure one healthy season should be enough to take Bynum off the injury risk list.

Too many people reaching for Bynum in Round 1. Now in a snap everything looks weird with both Bynum and Dirk slipping out Round 1 and even Round 2 in one of my recent mock drafts.

Andrew Bynum did not practice Wednesday, still has knee “discomfort” link

Bynum shut down from any basketball activities until pain is gone in knee, says Dileo. Right now we want to be cautious - Dileo.

Ugh. Sorry Sixers fans (and people who drafted him). I made sure to avoid him.

As a Lakers fan I'm one of the few still rooting for him, get out there Drew.

More specific details today: link

"Two days ago he had the Synvisc injections [bone joint lubricant in each knee], which he routinely does before the season," general manager Tony DiLeo said. "He still has some discomfort in his [right] knee, so we are going to hold him from basketball-related activities until he is pain-free. He is improving, so it's nothing new, but it is something that is not completely healed, so we are going to hold him out until he is pain-free."

The pain that is costing Bynum time on the court stems from something that happened while he was working out before training camp.

"I didn't go down [to the floor in pain], it was just an up-and-under [move]," he said. "I didn't feel any pop or anything like that. It just kind of buckled. From that point on, we're just being really cautious and just using the doctor and listening to them, and they've basically been saying to let it rest and everything will be fine, and I'll be all right."

On Sept. 15, Bynum had Orthokine treatment in Germany on both knees. He decided to have that done after former Lakers teammate Kobe Bryant raved about how much better his knee felt after the procedure. Sometime between getting back from Germany and the start of training camp, Bynum suffered the bone-bruise injury that still has him sidelined. The Synvisc injections on Monday also were planned before the knee injury.

Happy to say that I owned Bynum only last season... and that one healthy year is enough, never again, its not surprise Lakers didnt want him anymore (regardless D12 is in LA or not), damaged goods for rest of career.

He is on my "do not draft" list.

Nada. Still considered out "indefinitely" and the 76ers have gone to great lengths to avoid any talk of specfics. It's tough to even speculate, although you'd certainly hope he won't need more than a few more weeks at this point. The first update of substance to look for is some kind of clearance for on-court activity.

So with the news that Bynum won't be on court until January, is he cuttable at this point? I can't get anything for him in trade, trust me, I've tried.

Are you in danger of missing the playoffs? The longer you hold him, the less sense it makes to cut, so do it now if it's going to happen. I'd be very surprised if he cleared waivers, though.

What do you think of the trade value for Bynum at this point. I have him in 0 leagues currently but I always love the prospect of getting an end of the season stud by giving up very little.

What do you think is reasonable to give up for a roll of the dice on Bynum? Are we talking 5-6 rounder at this point?

Shoemosher- The fact that it seems you are punting blocks makes it easier in my eyes to find and accept a trade for a decent guy. A decent chunk of Bynum's value lies in his 2bpg so his value on your team is already lower than most. I would shop him around now before you waste time with him on your bench and let another owner shoulder the risk. To me a 5-6 round guy wouldn't be unreasonable given the uncertainty of Bynum's health

And the hits keep coming...

On Friday night, Bynum met with reporters and said there is now swelling and cartilage damage in his left knee. It is not "degredation." There's no surgery required, but it needs more time. Bynum said this information doesn't change the timeline offered earlier this week that has him starting basketball activity in late December, but there's going to be alarm in Sixersville nonetheless. He also said the damage is the result of him overcompensating for the right knee.

Cartilage damage is one of those terms in sports that just makes you panic. With the number of injuries Bynum has had, that's the last thing you want to hear. And with it being the other knee, that's fairly significant. That's two knees he has to get healthy after a career with issues.

http://www.cbssports.com/nba/blog/eye-on-basketball/21014289/andrew-bynum-has-cartilage-damage-in-left-knee

I pushed him out to mid-January, but not much faith in that sticking frog

Forgot it to name Wade in this group, at 2nd part of his career every possible time he will get rest to heal all his body parts and be max. ready for playoffs (play one, sit two, play 1, sit another two, dont need that durring season and also tone a games in last month of year come fantasy playoff, dont even remember when I drafted him last time, same with Amare, Granger, Bogut,Bynum & Manu), with EG last time I tried this season (got him "only" from last year in 2 keeper leagues) and thats it.

Stupidity from some pro sports players are beyond any measuring...

The Sixers fear that Andrew Bynum has done additional damage to his knees by bowling recently, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

The news keeps getting worse for the Sixers, whose theoretical franchise center has yet to play a game in their uniform. Bynum admitted to reporters that he recently suffered a "setback" and had "weakened cartilage" in both of his knees, so presumably the Sixers have linked that setback to his bowling. It's weird, it's disappointing, and the story is still developing, so check back soon for an update.

Philly is fortunate that they have a get out of jail free card because they haven't extended his contract yet and are out of cap hell after amnestying Brand. I'm still guessing Philly extends him with a max contract even though he could easily be Arenas 2.0. Philly should take that money and try to sign someone else, they're not a NBA siberia like Minnesota/Milwaukee, should be able to get someone good to play there.

I'm just happy I didn't take him on any teams. yes

One internationally respected orthopedic surgeon, who is not involved with Bynum’s treatment and has not seen his MRIs, told The News Journal that all of the information that has been released by the player and the Sixers points to a likely diagnosis of osteochondritis dessicans lesions. The surgeon said that if this is the case, there’s a small chance that Bynum’s knees could heal sufficiently on their own in time for him to return for the playoffs this season, but called that scenario “wishing on a star.”

I'd go ahead and wait before reacting to this specific piece of information.

Bynum's ownership rate dropped to 85% in Yahoo leagues and just hit the waivers in my big money league. Buser, would you bite with the #1 waiver pick? I've been in this league for a few years and I am certain he will not make it through waivers without getting claimed. I have a guard heavy team and he would be a welcome fit IFhe comes back to play this year. The injury news had been grim however the latest report came from a doctor not involved with his recovery.

One theory is that with each of Bynum’s numerous setbacks, Collins realized the chances that Bynum won’t play at all this season kept increasing. The games won’t stop until Bynum can begin practicing, which could still be months away.

Andrew Bynum said on Monday that his left knee still hurts when he walks, but his right knee feels good and he still hopes to play this season

Bynum seemed optimistic about his appointment to have an MRI on Dec. 20, saying, "Worst-case scenario, it's another month. Best-case scenario, I can ramp it up." Unfortunately, he also acknowledged the "possibility" that doctors will tell him to shut it down for the year, and he added arthritis to his list of maladies. "It's arthritis in the knees. Cartilage is missing. That's not going to regrow itself," he said. The fact that walking causes him pain suggests he's still a good distance from returning

Finally today the Sixers GM will deliver the bad news. Why would they delay a day any good news? Dileo would have been doing cartwheels yesterday at a positive report that would have Bynum on the court in a month. I doubt the Sixers report that his season is over also. Bynum out all year sounded the same yesterday as today. Nope what we will hear today is agent spin. The old Bynum needs another procedure BUT he will recover fully and should be on the court in mid-March. Hopefully leading Philly deep into the playoffs. Agents lying about the health of players is becoming a real problem. It was Bogut's agent who convinced the Warriors to lie about Bogut's career threatening injury. The Warriors owner admitted earlier this week. Delaying this a day was a terrible judgement call for all involved.

What the latest MRI means rather than just swimming for conditioning he can start to ride a bike and do the elliptical machine. DiLeo called Friday’s news the first step of a six-step process to him playing again. Bynum might progress well through the steps but he is not close to getting back on the court right now.

And cant wait same all same all for next season, step one:rehab durring the summer, step two: missed preseason, step three: missed first 2 weeks of season, step four:missed first 2 months, step five:out untill ASB, step six:out for the season but aiming next one to be ready like never before... yeah, for sure...

Total bust...

Funny how they used the same verbage in John Wall's update "cleared for increased activity". Seriously what does that mean? I'm hurting for wins and have already dropped AB, but does John Wall have the same fate?

So what do you do with Bynum in a keeper league?  Let him start his program and see how he progresses?

Treat him as top 50-ish for 9-cat keeper purposes, and we know the per-game upside is there. It would depend on how many you keep.

Then yes, you hang on where 72 (12x6?) players are kept and your options are weak.

"Pretty sure he'll be back" this season. Says that he is currently running on a treadmill, and should progress to set shooting and initial on-court activities soon. Maybe second week of February would be an absolute, no setback, best-case?

Andrew Bynum is legitimately performing basketball activities on a basketball court. This is a good step.

Andrew Bynum participating in this morning's shoot around.

Just an idea of how non physical Bynum's drills are - his cell phone appears to be tucked in his sock

I think its still a week or two early but it totally depends on your league and how speculative the other owners are. It only takes one to snipe him early on you

Andrew Bynum has been cleared to run & told reporters in Philly today pain in knees is minimal & possible return around All-Star break

Yep, he's not available in my leagues. He's aiming for about a month out, and I doubt he'll last as this news circulates.

Andrew Bynum continues to report progress with his injured knees, but a significant hurdle awaits. "I still haven't done lateral movement, and that will be the biggest test," the 76ers center said before Monday's game against the San Antonio Spurs at the Wells Fargo Center. "Cutting is the last thing to do, and I think I am building up to that slowly but surely." Bynum said he still hopes to make his first appearance this season after the all-star break. He said the most positive development is that he is not feeling pain in his knees. Bynum, whose only running has come on a treadmill, has been working on shooting and post moves. The Sixers' first game after the all-star break is Feb. 20 at Minnesota. Bynum said he understands that the lateral movement will have to take place in the next few weeks if that goal is to be met.

Asik was my weak link and if Bynum ends up playing and playing well, then I think dropping Asik was a good move

Now's probably a good time to consider stashing him, don't you think?  About 3 weeks till all-star break, maybe a month from playing.  On a team punting FT% like mine (though Curry really throws a wrench in that strategy!), is dropping Henson for Bynum a good move by the end of the week?  I check every day (sometimes 2-3 times) to make sure someone else hasn't gotten him but I know others have their eye on him, they have to in my league...I'm thinking then maybe if/when Bargnani returns, I'd probably drop Amir Johnson for a (hopefully improved) Henson (maybe Ilyasova gets hurt to give him meaningful minutes) or someone else who may be floating around?  I've been pretty strong all year, I'm still in 2nd place and I can definitely make a run for 1st these next 2 weeks.  Looking like I'm going to pick up at least 2-3 games this week being up 8-1 and 1st-place down 5-4 so far.

Thoughts on the Bynum issue, considering I'm already #2?

In terms of the actual 5.04 value, yea maybe.  But you have a championship team right there, assuming Bynum performs to 3/4 of his expectations upon returning.  No duds and good waiver wire pickups in there too makes it a team to contend with.

Pushed him out through early March based on today's news. (All tweets from same source)

Bynum: "I think I worked well for two days on the court and then I got a lot of pain, so we backed down a little bit today."

Bynum on whether he'll play this month: "I’m not sure. It’s all going to depend on if we get a setback or not."

Bynum on left knee pain: "It limits me from continuing to go. I was on the court for two hours yesterday, so that’s pretty good."

Bynum on left knee pain: "I don’t know if it’s normal soreness, or if I’ll have to play with it. I don’t know what it is."

Bynum: "I’m not really optimistic. When I get on the court, that’s when I’m going to be ready. I’m trying as hard as I can."

Bynum still shooting one-on-zero in drills. He's expected to progress to 1-on-1, then 2-on-2, then 5-on-5.

Bynum on whether left knee pain is greater than pain he's tried to play thru before: "Definitely. ... It’s just not ready yet."

What's the current thought on Bynum as a stash in a redraft roto league?  Is he still worth holding into on the bench, or worth dropping over a high-upside guy like Valunciunas or Favors, or even Hawes?

At this point, would anyone really be surprised if he didn't take the court at all this season? He's owned in all of my leagues, but he's not on my teams. It's going to have to be your call, but I'd probably be looking to grab Favors at least through the deadline and then reassess.

First, the update. Andrew Bynum has practiced with the team. That team being the Sixers. That practice being a basketball practice. His bone bruise lube arthritis knee Spike Lee joint is apparently feeling good enough to play basketball with his teammates. This is a good sign. His return may be imminent. On the other hand... WHAT THE HELL?!?! For like 6 straight months, we get updates about everything from his anti-gravity jogging chamber to how much he sweat while walking to the bank, then all of a sudden he just PRACTICES and it's like "oh, yeah, he practiced -- FYI."

NBA teams kill me with their terms. I wouldn't bet for/or against Bynum playing anytime this season. When Bynum said he had pain in his knee 10 days ago I cut all ties with him. This daily update on oh it feels good today is the wrong approach. His knee should always feel good. The fact that sometimes it hurts means a lot more to me than the sometimes it does not. What the heck does practice even mean? he could have been watching film. Or listening to his coach drone on about how much the team sux.

I say it's been time to give on up Bynum. Even if he does come back in say, 2-3 weeks ( which I doubt), it's too late. Season is close to over that point, he would be limited, and would not have enough time to get into "game shape" to make much of an impact.

With respect to the playoffs (week 21-23), I'm holding Elton Brand now for some source of blocks.  Is it worh dropping him to stash Andrew Bynum.

Seems to me if Andrew Bynum doesn't play all his games during the playoffs or underperforms, I'm risking losing a reliable player.

Don't know that I've heard Brand and reliable in the same sentence this year. And when your 2 highest block guys are Brand and Jeff Green, you probably aren't doing too well in that cat. In a 12 team league you can find Tony Allen type guys in the FA pool at anytime, so if you feel Bynum might help you in the playoffs it's a reasonable stash. As to whether he will help, your guess is as good as anyones at this point.

Amazed still is the talk about Bynum, Bogut & Co. Guy didnt play the game in one year, he cant practice, he is out of shape... Amazed, really amazed.

"Speaking before the 76ers hosted the Miami Heat on Saturday night, Collins said Bynum's brief 5-on-5 workout only showed how far away he is from being able to play, and hinted at just what a lost season this has been for the team. "He looked like a guy who hadn't played in nine months," Collins said. "I don't think any bells and whistles should be sent off that he's close to playing."

Collins said watching Bynum go through a little practice only left him disappointed considering just how much the team's big plans have been ruined by Bynum's constant knee issues. "It's amazing seeing him standing out there; he distorted the whole practice," Collins said. "You get visions of what might've been ... He's said that he's going to play, but this season is slipping away. We've got 24 games after (this weekend). We're eight (games) under .500, and we've got to play the Miami Heat four times."

Here we go, like expected... He can be fully stashed... like B.Roy.

At one point during the discussion, Bayless said that a source inside the Sixers organization told him that the most recent MRI on Andrew Bynum’s knees showed degeneration, meaning in effect that they will never return to full strength. Bynum was also a no-show in the locker room prior to Tuesday's game, when he was scheduled to give an update on his condition. Bayless continued by explaining that Andrew may show some flashes of the dominance he displayed last season, when he averaged 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds per game for the Lakers, but he will be unable to sustain it, as the knees will never be able to fully recover.

“I spoke the other day to a very reliable Sixers source -  I spoke to somebody I trust - who told me and confirmed to me Andrew Bynum’s knees are shot,” Bayless said.  “We’re talking about beyond repair, progressive arthritis, deep degeneration, unfixable.

-I hated this trade from day 1. It had Jeff Ruland redux written all over it. Except this time we gave up and All-Star AND 3 first round picks. Oh and by the way Vucevic is posting nearly a double double for the season as the starting center in Orlando. I can't believe a billionaire like Josh Harris who made his money on Wall Street got swindled like an unwitting dupe by Mitch Kupchak. A fool and his money....

1. Who did the physical for the Sixers? 2. How much did the Front Office know and when, as they were perfectly happy to string fans along in order to sell season tickets. 3. How much better will they be this season than last, Iguodala, Hawkless, Vucevic, and first-round draft pick notwithstanding? 4. Did they have no other options for trading Iguodala and Harkless? Risk is fine, but this seems to have been more than a risk, more like they were completely snookered, which also raises questions about the front office and de facto general manager Doug Collins going forward.

-I just tired of posters mentioning Ruland and all. You do bring up some valid points. I would of like to see Harkless and Vuc stay. Vuc at this point looks better than Hawes and at times LaVoy. Vuc's play and confidence went downhill after his injury. Harkless also looks to be a future defensive stopper who can block and get at SF at play PF at times like he did at college. Still curious though who made the trade Collins or Thorn?

-Torn on this one.....Stern likes to uphold the integrity of the game and the league (exhibit 1: Fining Greg Popovich for holding out his Spurs veterans in their away game at Miami). I'd like to see a little truth come out in this Bynum deal. There's a smell to the NBA where a star player (Howard) can dog it on his team (Orlando), thereby forcing a trade to....... the premier team in the league which conveniently resides in the Western Division (thus increasing the odds of an LA/Miami match up for the finals and great TV ratings. Did LA withhold inside info on this guys physical condition or were the Sixers that stupid, that desperate? Okay, please don't answer that one! DiLeo said what he said for public consumption 2 weeks ago regarding this guys knees, but I believe the truth lies elsewhere. Stern should fine LA for not being truthful about the physical condition of one of it's players under contract or he should fine the Sixers for being brain dead, naive(sic) rubes in knowingly accepting a deal for a known injured player.....

-Also, for the 1,823rd time, this reveals what a complete sleaze bag Stern is: he fines NBA championship coach Poppovich for looking after his players, and allows total deceit and theft to be a valid policy if it benefits the Lakers.

With all due respect, the condition of Andrew Bynum's knees was never a secret. Not only was it well known before the trade... and for years before the trade... but the Sixers doctors also got a good look at him and his medical records before approving the trade. They can play the "wronged party" all they want now, but they knew exactly what they were getting into and went ahead anyway. This has nothing to do with the Lakers or the league or Andrew Bynum's bowling. This has everything to do with the Sixers making a laughably bad decision.

I live in Los Angeles. When the Sixers fell for the Bynum trade, my friends were quick to point out that Bynum was damaged goods---both physically and mentally. How come the morons who run the Sixers didn't know they were getting a "loser"? It serves them right. 3 players and a #1 draft choice for Jason richardson. That's what happens when you go for the plum without checking it out completely. The Sixers will pay for this for years! With what they have up front, Allen and Hawes, they'd have a hard time matching up against Duke. Stupid move you idiots!

Yeah - they "dumped" Iggy's contract (which is only one year longer than Bynum's) - but they also gave up THREE first round draft picks to do so (Vuc, Harkless and next year's). They alsotook on Richardson's contract. Dumping Iggy could have been much less painless!! Remember when Minnesota offered Kevin Love for Iggy?

What's even funnier is this....Tony Dileo was "promoted" to GM in large part due to his involvement in this deal. He was praised for bringing Bynum here. LMFAO.

I'm not touching this guy with a ten foot pole (did think about it), though I did luck out with him last year.  None of the stashes have actually worked out this year so far.

Wall is having a terrible fantasy season,

Rubio is a tough guy to own due to his extreme performances in a few categories,

Bogut showed up a little, then said goodbye,

Rose may or may not play (just ask his brother),

Granger has returned with some 1 for X stinkers,

Mo Williams depending on who you ask is either taking a little contact in practice or his hand is still hurting and not coming back for a few more weeks.

And let's not forget Kevin Love who some unfortunate owners drafted, came back sub par, and may now come back for 15 to 20 games, which I think is nearly impossible considering what happened last time he came back too soon.

If anyone was actually still holding out hope, this new update should kill any of it. If you haven't rid yourself of this guy yet, it's time to do so....

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, Andrew Bynum has experienced some swelling in the knee since practice last Friday.

Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and zero him out for the season at this point.  frog

And now it's official...

Andrew Bynum will undergo season-ending surgery on both knees, source tells Y! Sports.

Andrew Bynum (knee surgeries) will be on crutches for six weeks.
Most athletes can return to action following a simple scope in 2-3 weeks. At this point, Bynum is not most athletes. He's previously had major surgeries to repair a dislocated kneecap, torn cartilage & sustained bone bruises.

While it would be wonderful if Bynum - an unrestricted free agent - gave the Sixers special consideration in light of all that they lost in trading for him and the agonizing wait for him to return, a team source with knowledge of the situation said last week that he does not believe that will be the case. The Sixers ultimately may have nothing to show for this deal - no Bynum, no Nik Vucevic, who looks as if he could be a budding star with the Magic, no Maurice Harkless, blossoming in his own way in Orlando, and one less first-round draft pick. All once sparkling assets, they now are reminders of a potentially franchise-crippling mistake by the front office.

Just thought of the most selfish player in the NBA giving his team a contract discount is hysterical.

Hope they cut their losses and move on.

No athlete would ever do that and none can be blamed for not doing it. It's ridiculous to even suggest it, let alone ask a "source" if it's going to happen.
