I'm planning on making a run for one of these guys, but I'm not sure which has the better outlook for me.  I'm planning to offer Andre Iguodala and another player(s) for either Paul George or Nicolas Batum.

Here are Paul George's numbers:

In my eyes, Paul George is right now the hottest pickup.  He's the star of Indiana right now.  He's been playing otherworldly, but my only concern with his future value is 1) will his numbers go down when Granger comes back?  - this may happen even if he still gets good minutes because if George moves to SG as predicted, then his rebounding numbers are sure to go down.  2) I already have David West, although George plays a different position, their productions can contradict each other depending on who's having the good game and who's taking the shots.  Ever since George has been on this hot run as the main guy in Indiana, David West's production has suffered (could be coincidence, but I don't think so).  Having both might just be conflict where they swap good games with each other.

Nicolas Batum has been a rock all season, and especially in my 11-category format, he contributes in so many categories.  I also have Hickson from the Trailblazers, but they haven't really effected each other's production.  I think Batum is the safer pick, but George has opened my eyes these recent weeks.

Who should I go for? (I'm trying to upgrade my team by trading away depth for more top heavy talent, so 2 for 1)

To paraphrase batum and Paul george are both great to own in fantasy. With Granger returning i would choose Batum. But not by much. why would an owner trade either? it would cost u Ryan Anderson and iggy at least to get either. U could package Deron for either but doubt that would work. How many keepers? Kyrie and David Lee and Ryan Anderson are ur best 3 keepers with Deron a distant 4th. Why would the Batum or george owners trade their stars for lower level keepers even if there are 2 of them? personally if I owned George or batum it would cost u Kyrie.

Iggy and who? because I don't see Iggy getting you past the front door for either one of those two.

Actually, the owner of Batum is willing to take Deron Williams straight up for him.  I'm moving Iguodala and another small piece for another player entirely (was offered Chris Paul for Andre Iguodala and David West / was offered Rajon Rondo for Andre Iguodala and Kyle Korver (or Kawhi Leonard)).

Why the hell wouldn't you accept CP3 for that.

avatarcastorius (78 posts)  1/18/2013 3:14 AM

You're right I should accept it, the only problem is, my league is pretty restrictive with positions, and I already have 3 good PGs (obviously, none as good as CP3).  The maximum playable PGs in a full scheduled day is 3.  So, there really is no point in having more than 3 pure PGs on your roster - as one would be sitting out on a busy NBA scheduled day.

It would seem easy then for me to just trade one of my other PGs.  The problem is, my league is very tight with trading (not alot of trades are made in my league, moving players is difficult), so there is no guarantee that I can move one and get fair value in return.  Lin would be the obvious choice to move, but he's very underappreciated in my league (he's an elite steals guy and he sprinkles alot of other stats, but people don't really notice and they don't have the luxury of seeing his value via basketball monster).  So, logically I'm moving to trade Deron Williams, as I can get good value for him.  But I want to make sure I can secure a deal for him before I make the trade.

So I have two possible moves I can make:

1. Trade Andre Iguodala and David West for Chris Paul

Then trade Deron Williams for Nicolas Batum (this move is necessary as I get back a better SF to replace Iguodala whom I lost in the Paul deal, and I get rid of one of my 4 PGs)

2. Trade Andre Iguodala and Kyle Korver (or Kawhi Leonard) for Rajon Rondo

Then trade Deron Williams for Nicolas Batum

While, Chris Paul is obviously better than Rajon Rondo - the reason option #2 is more attractive is because I only have to give up one asset in the first trade (Andre Iguodala).  I don't really consider Kyle Korver or Kawhi Leonard a real asset, to me they're both expendable and I wouldn't feel like I would need to replace them if I lost them (they are my bench players anyhow).  On the other hand, losing David West would put a hole in my starting PF spot - it's a big that I don't have suitable replacement for if I make the trade in option #1.  So, I feel like I'm giving up more to get Chris Paul than to get Rajon Rondo (which is fair).  The other reason the Rondo deal looks better is because it makes me far more dominate in assists.    Rondo is the clear frontrunner in assists per game in the league - he puts me far and away ahead of any other team.  Whereas, trading for Paul and then trading away Deron will only net me a couple more assists per game at most.  Paul of course is more efficient and contributes more in most of the other categories, but I feel like I may not be able to be as competitive in rebounding (since keeping West will obviously keep me stronger in rebounds, and also Rondo is the best rebounding PG in the league).

The possible 3rd option (this is not confirmed because I could be reaching here, and I don't know if my opponents will agree):

3. Trade Andre Iguodala and Kyle Korver (or Kawhi Leonard) for Rajon Rondo

Then trade Deron Williams and David West for Nicolas Batum and Tim Duncan

In this scenario, I upgrade my PG situation (slightly), SF situation and my PF situation.  It's iffy that the 2nd trade partner will accept putting Tim Duncan for David West in the deal, but I might be able to convince him because he seems to severely undervalue Tim Duncan (remember, he doesn't have the tools I have with basketball monster to see how the numbers all come together).  I might be able to convince him that Deron is worth a little more than Batum.  I might even be justified in saying so because Deron is trending upwards.  Also, Deron has a nice big category (assists), whereas Batum is more of a sprinkler with stats (so it's much harder to see how overall valued he really is).

Assuming I could choose between all 3 options, which would be the best?  Do I jump on Paul strictly because it's a steal of a deal (I know this), even though it may screw up some of the balance with my team when it comes to rebounding and losing a key "big" in my lineup that I can't replace?  Or do I go with Rondo because I can get him for much cheaper, only really giving up one asset (Andre Iguodala) who's not even comparable?

I'm not looking at lineup considerations if I can trade Iguodala and West for Paul, I'm just taking that deal, and sorting out my lineup later.

Based on current numbers, this is what happens to my lineup if I take Option #1: (Trade for Paul instead of Rondo, give up David West, keep Korver)

I suppose you can mke an argument either way which one is better.  The first one (acquiring Paul) is obviously got more higher overall value.  But the balance is better in Option #2.  Option #1 gives me clear domination in 4 catgories (out of 11), and a good chance in 2 more categories, while keeping moderate in 3 categories.  6 categories is good enough for the win.  So does dominating in 4 categories, being very good at 2 categories, and merely average in 3 categories, give me a better chance at winning than Option #2:

Where I'm very good at 6 categories, dominating in one category, and average in 3 categories.

So it's basically being dominate in 4 categoris, very good in 2 categories, and average in 3 categories VS. dominate in 1 category, very good in 6 categories, and average in 3 categories.

This is for a 11-categories total league.  Do I spread myself to be more well-rounded (Option #2) just in case I have some bad luck in a category for a week or just a bad schedule where a normally dominate category I end up losing in?  (which is possible).

Here is Option #3 (although I don't know if this one will be accepted): (acquire Rondo, Batum and Duncan, while giving up Deron, Iguodala and Korver)

I'm sorry if I missed it, but is this roto or h2h. If it's h2h, I'd be leery about Option 3, with Duncan potentially sitting games after the All-Star break.

And how does your FA pool look? I've noticed lately, that there are some potentially good plays at PF sitting on the wire in several of my leagues. You might have a few as well.

Sorry I forgot to mention, it's h2h - one win - 12 teams

Unfortunately, the waiver wire is pretty bare, especially for frontcourt players.

Just to give you clear cut examples, here are the best rebounders available now:

- Kevin Love

- Reggie Evans

- Zaza Pachulia

- Kris Humphries

None with the exception of maybe Love is rosterable at this point.  Evans is too one dimensional for an 11-category league especially.  Pachulia is so off and on depending on if he gets the start or not - which he often doesn't.  Humphries keeps fluctuating with his minutes, one minutes he's in the doghouse, the next he's getting back some minutes, then only to move back to the doghouse.  Love may not be back at all this season, or possibly only by the 2nd or final round of our fantasy playoffs.

I am worried about Duncan getting time off during my fantasy playoffs (near the end of real life regular season).

I'm leaning towards picking up Paul, however I need to fill a void in rebounds so at least I'm somewhat adequate there.

So I'm proposing to do this:

Option #4: Trade Andre Iguodala and David West for Chris Paul

Then trade Deron Williams and Ryan Anderson for Nicolas Batum and Tim Duncan

This is what it does to my current roster:

It turns my 3 pointers from my best strength into just a very good category for me, but it helps stablize my rebounding and even fg%.  It also brings back to life blocks (although this is my weakest category, I might still be able to beat a couple of teams in the league with that small output - prior to acquiring Duncan, I was dead last).

Now, the only negative for this option is exactly what you said, "Duncan may sit out for many games down the stretch especially during the fantasy playoffs".  Let me ask you guys this, is this something that has happened in previous years?  Has Duncan been known to sit out in the last few games of the regular season?  I know how Popovich is, so it wouldn't surprise me.  I'm just wondering if there is a history for this as I wasn't involved in fantasy the past few years.

Also, giving up Ryan Anderson does hurt me more than his value would indicate.  Stretch Frontcourt players are more valuable because the 3s they generate comes from a position that normally doesn't accumulate any 3s.  This maginfies the impact of his 3s especially in my league where the position restrictions are tight (PG, SG, SF, PF, C, C, F, G, Util).  Getting 1.5 treys per game out of any of your guard slots is merely average for that position.  But getting 1.5 treys out of the Center spot is considered elite level from that position.

So losing Anderson woudn't be easy - however, Duncan is clearly a better rebounder, and Anderson has been downtrending a bit in that rotation he's in.  He's not scoring as much, not hitting as much treys, rebounds are going down, and he's playing so inconsistently lately.

Or should I make a move for LeMarcus Aldridge instead of Tim Duncan (although Aldridge doesn't help me as much in FG%, Blocks and Rebounds)? (might not be such a great idea, because then that'll mean I'll have 3 Portland Trailblazers on my team with Batum, Hickson and Aldridge - could be a scheduling nightmare for h2h on a bad week)

Well, looking at things with just a quick glance, it looks like you have at least two options which could work best for you:

1. Since it's h2h, my initial reaction would be to trade for Paul (giving up Iggy and West), then move D Will for Batum straight up. You definitely bulk up your strengths with those two moves. However, I do see the issue you have with losing a big.

In this instance, I wouldn't worry so much about trying to build REBs with this option (basically, you're punting, or "ignoring", REBs). What I would try and focus on is FG%, while keeping your ASTs and STLs at the level they're at. If there's no one on the wire who could help you, even as a "flavor of the week" type of move, then maybe you could trade for another player (not necessarily a PF/C type) who shoots a high % in a decent volume of shots - in other words, you don't want someone who shoots 50% by taking just 4 shots a game. More like someone who shoots 50% taking 8 or 10. You have Jeremy Lin on your roster, and in my opinion, with the move for Paul, you could maybe try and move Lin for a better shooting G or F type. And you might even still be able to keep at least one of either ASTs or STLs at a decent level. Not sure exactly what the impact moving Lin would have for you though, but that's what I'm seeing with this option.

2. The second, and riskier play, would be to still do the first move, trading Iggy and West for Paul. But then, you would make that other move for Batum and Duncan (moving D Will and Anderson). It's risky because of the chance you're taking with DNP-CD's from Duncan. The only other way to make up for this would be to make one more move for another big. And again, the only real piece I see worth trading is Lin. Don't know what he would be worth on the market, but all the other pieces you have, you pretty much need to make your roster work.

Maybe someone else can see something which makes more sense, or is better thought out. But right now, that's how it looks to me. If you can't build on REBs, I'd punt that cat, and focus on FG%, while getting Paul to build up your ASTs and STLs.

Thanks for the advice So-Tex.

I doubt I could get much for Lin on the trade market.  The guys in my league simply don't hold him in high regard.  He isn't the best PG out there, but he gets alot less credit for what he provides in my league in particular (if you look at his value in my league, he's producing at a 0.16 overall value - yet,  his perceived value is much lower in my league for some reason).

I could get three times more for a D-Will on pure name value alone.

As for your idea about FG%, perhaps the Duncan move would actually help more with that than he would with rebounds.  Also losing Ryan Anderson would be an addition by substraction when it comes to fg%, as he jacks up shots like guard more than a frontcourt player.

I think I'm content with acquiring Duncan even if it means he may get less run in my fantasy playoffs.  However, my other dilemma is what I was originally asking when I made this post - should I get Paul George instead of Nicolas Batum?

Paul George has been simply unbelievable recently.  He's playing out of his mind.  I'm wondering is it realistic to assume he will sustain this level of production?

Furthermore, Paul George solves the problem of rebounds more so than acquiring Nicolas Batum would (George is rebounding like a Power Forward now the way he's playing).

Can George maintain this level of production he's had for the past month and past few weeks?  I would be pretty much sold on George, but there is still uncertainty when Granger comes back - will his numbers go down? (I realize George would move down to SG when Granger comes back, but does this reduce his rebounding numbers then?  Will he get less touches?)  Would this make Batum the safer option as I know what I'm getting with him?  His current season production in my league is better overall than George's mainly because he hits a few more threes, gets more assists and less turnovers.  However, he doesn't get the rebounds or steals that George does.

Paul George or Nicolas Batum?

Here is Batum's numbers:
