Matt's unavailable today so I've adjusted the stats for now.  I'm sure he'll have adjustments to make himself, but here's the current state:

  • Speights set at 20 m/g assuming he gives Thompson, Zeller, and Walton more rest.
  • Thompson reduced to 33 m/g from 35.
  • Zeller reduced to 32 m/g from 34.

I haven't seen much news analyzing the trade so if we hear that Speights will have a bigger role, we'll make some adjustments.

Any thoughts on the Memphis side Ken? Their bench seems really shallow now....

Irving, Waiters, Zeller is obviously Cleveland's future core. So their minutes are safe and roles. tristan thompson I am not sold on but would assume he is set at the PF. Speights backing up both positions should get Zeller's old minutes of almost 24 a game. Selby is a darkhorse. I can really see him taking Alonzo Gee's job at SF and running with it.

Memphis was all cap room. If they keep Gay they would have had to shell out money without this trade. They may still trade Gay but now they have less monetary reasons to trade Gay.

Yes, for MEM their bench is pretty thin at the moment. I would expect more minutes for Arthur (set at 25) and Leuer should actually play there too (10-15 m/g).

BREAKING: Grizzlies are going to sign former Knick Bill Walker and former Celtic Delonte West. Also will sign Sasha Vujacic.

Am told a Vujacic signing, if it happened, wouldn't be anytime soon. He's currently under contract in Turkey.

-----

If Selby did happen to be ready for regular NBA minutes, it wouldn't be at SF. He's 6'2, 185. Daniel Gibson can't find any minutes in the current rotation, and neither will Selby.

I was a Varejao owner.  Now I'm a Thompson owner.  Should I be a Speights or Zeller owner instead?

Thompson > Zeller > Speights. Speights is there because Varejao is out for the season and they don't want to run Thompson/Zeller into the ground, but they'll remain the starters.

Yay, a trade, how exciting!  Or not.  This has next-to-no fantasy implications at all.  I seriously doubt Speights intrudes on Thompson or Zeller's production, if anything he's going to take all of Luke Walton's minutes away, Walton shouldn't be playing anyway.  Good trade for the Cavs though, getting something for nothing, including a first round pick.  As for the Grizzlies, their bench usage becomes Bayless, Leuer, Walker, Arthur, and West in that order IMO, so not exactly Earth-shattering implications either.  The only reason this news is noteworthy is because it means Rudy Gay will finish the year in Memphis.  They still might trade him in the offseason, but for now I'd say the Grizzlies' roster is set for the playoffs.

Easy for a fan blogger to complain toni. He's not the one that would have had to cough up for the luxury tax bill at the end of the year.

I'm in a fairly deep league with a team that sets up pretty well for Jon Leuer.  Can he play D?  I would assume if Hollinger liked him before the draft and traded for him they may run him out there.  Room for 20 min/g with a full stat sheet?

The good thing is Speights produces well even with limited minutes.  I'm struggling to find a silver lining here.

Leuer should assume Speights' old role of FC4, with 15ish minutes per game. He doesn't exactly project to be a per-minute juggernaut, particularly for a grind-it-out team like the Grizz.

I would put an 'up' arrow next to Tony Allen right now, his starting job has never been more secure, and he's been improving lately.  Season rank of 131, but last 30 days rank of 83, and last 14 days rank of 48 suggests he'll have some value down the stretch, and he should play a big role as a defensive stopper for the Griz.

I would hate to rely on Tony Allen in a 12 team league. Ur stats are skewed Cap. lots of teams have played very few games the last 2 weeks. the London game, Phoenix has been off since last Friday, Utah played 2 games last week just for examples. Whereas Memphis has played a huge amount of games recently. Tony Allen is a defensive stopper but that does not translate to fantasy. Delonte West has a lot more offense than Tony Allen and is a good defensive player also. If Delonte could just stay out of court and on the basketball court he may be a sleeper.

I'm not relying on him, but in a 12 team league, he's a suitable 10th best player I think.  He's only averaged 27 minutes so far, and that number is sure to go up in the second half of the season, after they depleted their depth.  They don't need Delonte West scoring 15 points to win, they don't need his offense at all, they need Allen's defensive presence and willingness to absorb most of their opponent's best player's attack.  In his 27 minutes, he's still been able to get 8.2 PTS, 4.1 REB, and 1.7 STL.  At 36 minutes, he'd average 11 PTS, 5.5 REB, 2.3 STL, and 0.8 BLK, and only 1.4 TO, so somewhere in between that would be my guess.

Allen is playing more with Quincy Pondexter sidelined. Pondexter was pulling 24 mpg before he got hurt and is expected to be out another 10 days or so.

So it's premature, to me, to throw Pierce's name up there with Rudy Gay and Pau Gasol on the list of high-profile names available this trade season, even though we've heard more than one rival team speculate -- given that the Celtics and Grizzlies, sources say, have indeed held some exploratory trade talks since Gay hit the market -- that a three-way deal where Pierce lands in Memphis, Gasol goes to Boston and Gay joins the Lakers makes "some sense."

What kind of production changes would we see if this trade happens?  Gotta think Gay gets a downgrade in LA, Pau would be better off anywhere else so he would get a bump, and Pierce seems to be a wildcard for me. I can't imagine seeing Pierce in a Grizz uniform.

if indeed the rumours are true of GAY for Ed Davis + Jose C somewhere why in the world would the raps do this. BC save his job? Davis has been a revelation and will never demand the 17 mill that GAY makes.

Chad Ford

I think the "rumors" are more than rumors at this point. The two sides have been talking and have basically a rough framework for a deal dependent on them finding another team to take on Calderon. 2. The Raptors have been stuck in neutral for a while, they aren't landing a better play than Gay in free agency and while you're right Davis has been good, the Grizzlies aren't just giving Gay away for free. Grizzlies fans will argue that Memphis isn't getting enough. 3. Finally Bryan Colangelo has loved Gay since his college days. He was seriously torn between Gay and Bargnani on draft night. I think he feels like if he unites them, the Raptors instantly get better.

If raps trade Davis + Jose for Gay, they might literally lose every remaining game, they'll be that bad.

If this goes through as I said yesterday, next up for Raps, not necessarily all this year is Bargnani goes and DeRozan too eventually.

The Toronto Raptors and Memphis Grizzlies are moving closer to coming to an agreement on a trade centered on Rudy Gay.

The Raptors would send out both Jose Calderon and Ed Davis. Earlier reports have indicated that a future first round pick would also be included.

The Grizzlies have been working on finding a third team to take Calderon, with multiple league officials believing is nearly in place.

The front offices of each team are discussing the deal with their respective ownerships.

League source confirms Memphis-Toronto discussions for Rudy Gay deal have reached ownership level. Two and three-team scenarios in play.

he Grizzlies and Raptors have a deal in place that would send Gay and Hamed Haddadi to Toronto in exchange for Calderon and Davis according to ESPN.com's Marc Stein (via Twitter). The agreement hasn't been finalized yet because it will morph to include a third team, possibly the Pistons, that would acquire Calderon, says Stein, ESPN sources say Dallas is other prime landing spot for Calderon, but I'm told Mavs reluctant to part with SF that Grizz want: Vince Carter

Sources confirm other reports:  "seeking approval" for blockbuster deal with Memphis at the moment

Grizzlies have agreed in principle to trade F Rudy Gay (17.2 ppg) to Raptors, Marc Stein reports

Interesting that Darrell Arthur fell out of the discussion. With Davis and Arthur at PF, would Memphis dare to ship out Randolph as well?

Sources tell ESPN's Marc Stein that the Grizzlies and Raptors have a trade in place that would send Rudy Gay and Hamed Haddadi to Toronto in exchange for Ed Davis and Jose Calderon.

Stein also reports the Grizzlies plan to flip Calderon to a third team, with the Pistons at the front of the line to acquire the Spaniard. The Gay-to-Toronto trade has been bubbling under the surface for a while, but it finally appears as if it's done. Gay's value should go up since he'll be the primary option in Toronto, with Kyle Lowry also getting a boost since he'll no longer be sharing time. Calderon's value depends on where he lands, but any full-time starting role should make him a must-start. Unfortunately, the biggest loser here appears to be Davis, who will likely enter a reserve role behind Zach Randolph.

Fields, Derozan, Gay and Bargnani . LULZ

Bringing in Rudy Gay circles back to my main question in Toronto: What is the plan? What kind of team are they trying to build?

I find the explanations:  is not calling the shots in Memphis or Hollinger is drunk eqaully likely explaining Rudy Gay rumors.
