I am in a head to head league with only the 5 basic cats (no percentages). We have selected our draft order and I drew #3 out of 8 teams. That's pretty good except there's a twist. You can select the draft position you want. In other words, I have the choice of staying at third or moving down to the 8th position where I get 2 excellent players back to back (#8 & #9 via snake). The first two players selected will be LeBron and Durant. Therefore, I am left with the choice of getting Dwight Howard at #3 (and not selecting again until #14) or moving down and getting to choose 2 players from the following (depending on what people do ahead of me): Westbrook, Rondo, Love, Griffin, Josh Smith, D. Will, Wade, Jefferson, Aldridge, etc. I am leaning towards moving down to get 2 really good players instead of one super stud. If Howard were not coming off surgery and was not in a new situation in LA, it would be a no brainer. However, if healthy, Howard will dominate in 3 of the 5 cats.
Your thoughts? Remember - in my league, there are no 3 pointers or free throws. 0% Agree (0 votes) |
The reason I like going for Howard in an 8 team league is that you increase your chances of getting the keystone guys for the Howard strategy - Rondo, JSmith, Iguodala, Griffin. Its so much easier to secure the players you want in a smaller league. I say go for it.

This is what's great about BBM.
It looks like you can have the #3 and #14 pick or #8 and #9 pick. According to BBM, you would pick (with your settings):
#3 - Durant 0.88 + #14 Irving 0.37 = 1.25.
#8 - Love 0.54 + #9 Bynum 0.53 = 1.07
So the #3 pick is better, and if you got Dwight Howard at the #3 spot that would even be better as he's ranked higher than Durant.
You can even confirm by looking at last year's actual ratings instead of this years projected, and last years #3 and #14 players were worth 1.35 and last years #8 and #9 players were worth 1.12.

I'm assuming your 5 categories are: points, boards, assists, steals and blocks?
I'd take Howard and not look back. In an 8-team league, the elite players are at a higher premium. And with TO, 3PTS and FT% eliminated, Howard becomes that much more valuable. Also, Rondo becomes that more valuable. Howard strategy works in this scenario!

Just wanted to point out, if FT% is not counted (and TOs), there is no Dwight Howard strategy. Dwight Howard has no weaknesses - so no reason to punt or strategize. He becomes one of the top 2 players period.

for 5cats, dwight howard is #2 overall after lebron james, so if you're 3rd pick you are certainly not guaranteed to get dwight.
