As a guy that was a consensus first round pick just about everywhere, this guy has been the definition of BUST. He contributes across the board in those rare categories wihch only a few match. This year his FT% has been abysmal, that along with his turnovers and seemingly low FG% have him ranked around the 100 area,( I need to look at his stats a little more carefully). It seems that he is only a viable option in a punt FT% situation. Even last year he was not ranked in the top 15, I believe. Then why is it that I'm intrigued by him and crazilly want to trade for him? Perhaps he can raise his FT%, shoot a slightly better FG%, and lower his turnovers slightly. Perhaps that's wishful thinking, but a trade somewhere coud do that, or he could just go on one of his hot streaks. BBM projections clearly do not think anything of the sort. Anyway, I'd appreciate people's opinions on the man that is J-Smoove. 0% Agree (0 votes) |
First off i am a strictly roto player so my answer only applies to roto leagues. Definetly was not first round material on my draft board. Guys like him and Cousins (I only bring him up cuz he was also projected by many as a first round pick - myself not included) were criminally overvalued and the reason is they are just like anvils in the efficiency categories cuz they drag you down so much, to the point that even Dwight Howard is no longer the most valued piece in the so called Dwight build. Personally, I refuse to roster guys who are negatives in both fg and ft, so I avoid smoove and cousins at all costs, but the bottom line is, what is he gonna cost you in a trade? If you're talking top 3 rounds, I would not do it unless you're punting one or more of the efficiency cats, if its less than that then it depends on the player you're giving away.
Of course if this is H2H then please ignore everything I said

I haaated Smith as a first round pick. Hated it. Outside of a few hot weeks here and there he's just never done enough to offset his crappy shooting- at least not to the extent that he should be your no.1 guy. Unless you're punting FT%, he's really just not worth the drag. Plus his consistancy hasn't been great over the years- he's a bit of a yo-yo when it comes to fantasy value. Again, not an attribute you're looking for in a first rounder.
The so called concensus that he was a first round guy seemed to be based on nothing more than a feeling that he was suddenly going to turn into Lebron-lite because Jo Johnson was out of town. I'm guessing a lot of managers this year have learnt that a juicy narative is no substitute for a proven track record. Although to be fair, I wasn't expecting him to be this bad- thought he'd be about a top 30 guy in 9-cat.
Trade for him if it suits your team build, but don't expect his %'s to miraculously improve. If you can't shoot, you can't shoot. Doesn't matter what uniform you're wearing.

I loved Joshie coming into the season because he had SF eligibility. That was where he got the LBJ lite comparison. But his FT and FG shooting are horrendous. In a keeper ROTO league I traded Josh for ROndo 4 days before Rondo blew his knee out. If the man would just stop shooting 3's it would be such a great thing.

Well I certainly didn't draft him on any of my many teams, not that I didn't think he was great, I just prefered guys like Kyrie Irving over him.

Per-game ranks for 9-cat over the past three seasons: 20, 25, 16. Any optimism surrounded an increased role with JJ off to other pastures, but I'm not sure anyone saw the z-score of -4 coming for FT%. He's been top-20 for the punt FT% build, but that FT% is a true category killer.
