just read this blurb on rotoworld:

J.J. Hickson is slated to be the opening-night starter at center for the Blazers this season.

Rookie Meyers Leonard was set to battle for the job, but Hickson is having a great camp and coach Terry Stotts likes him as the incumbent.

Any thoughts on how this might/should change BBM projections for him?

Going off memory, JJ Hicksons per/36 stats were bout 14/10/1/1 based on BBM's projections for this year. Not super enthused about that ceiling but he's definitely a good value at current ADP.

This is clearly more anectdotal, but I've been burned by that JJ before. I drafted him last year and was bummed.

This might be a case where a player's real NBA abilities will come to be a strong limit on his fantasy value. As a Kings fan I have to say, the man has hands like bricks and makes some of the dumber decisions I've seen on a basketball court. For example, he decided at one point last season that a mid-range fade-away turn around jumper from the side of the basket was his bread and butter. He never, ever, has had that shot, but he kept doing it and clanking it til he would get pulled from games. On the fast-break he can get up the court, but when players try to get him the ball he seemed just as likely to flub the reception as he was to make an easy layup. JJ will play himself out of that starting line up sooner rather than later in my opinion. He is best suited for the first big off the bench role,a role he just can't seem to embrace.  But yes he has had some real strong streaks in the past so I could see him starting strong this year. Who knows where that will go though.

Averaging 10.8/11.3 through 4 games so far and not producing much in terms of blks/stls as expected. How do people feel about Hickson right now? Do you have faith that he can keep the double-double average up or should we try to sell him while his numbers are inflated?

Is it too early to give Hickson a bump in his rebounds projections?  I think he has proven that he is a rebounding force in this early season.  I do realize it's early, but I can't see him only getting 8.8 rebounds per game as the projections say.  He's currently averaging 11.1 rebounds per game - I am not saying he will maintain that, I doubt it - but I don't think double digit rebounding totals per game for the season is out of the question.

Look at his game logs.  I'd say that's pretty consistent - with only 5 games of under 10 rebounds (2 of which he had 9 rebounds), and these are balanced by his explosive games of 19 and 18 rebounds he had.  He doesn't do much else, but he's one hell of a rebounder.

Yes, you are correct that a bump is deserved. Fourth in the league in oreb%, third in dreb%, third in reb% to this point. [BkRef]

I sold high on JJ Hickson and I regret it. He was going 140+ in leagues when I drafted, what an amazing value he's been for those smart enough to draft him.

I dealt Hickson straight up for Manu.  Not sure what to think about it.  I sold when his minutes started to dip a few weeks back, and I thought that trend may continue.  Looks like I was wrong.  I still think when LA is completely healthy, Hickson loses significant value, but with the recent back comments, LA may not get fully healthy at all this year.

Well, I wouldn't regret it too much, unless you were dying for rebounds.  Hickson doesn't do much else.  He's okay for frontcourt points (think in the 10-11 ppg area), and he gets to the line quite a bit, but with fairly poor percentages (roughly 60%).  But, he's a poor passer and is really devoid in most other areas of the game.  I know this because in my current 11 category league - despite what looks like gaudy numbers (11 ppg, 11 rpg), he's not ranked so high in value.  This is mainly because he's well below average in almost every other stat.

But if you need rebounds, he's a great source of them.  If your league has offensive rebounds as a separate category, he can help you even more - as he's very active on the offensive boards.

what do you thnk his value is in a dynasty league? i got him in one over the summer and he's been great. I didnt expect Tim Duncan stats or anything but he is beating his career rebounding numbers by a ton. He is a free agent next summer and I am wondering how where he goes affects his numbers. If he becomes a starting PF somewhere and the coach doesn't mess with his minutes like Stotts does he can probably put up 15/11. If he ends up a back up, oh man, the wheels will fall off....what do you guys think?

Where/how he is deployed will completely affect his numbers. Right now, his job is to crash the offensive boards and get put-backs, with LMA playing so much on the perimeter. Pair him with a post player and his lack of many discernable skills comes more to light. He doesn't make his FTs, is (relatively) high-TO, and doesn't accumulate many STL/BLK, and that's why he's only 135th in per-game (174th in qualified per-minute) despite his "surprisingly good" numbers.
