really surprised there's not a topic for this guy yet

not sure how preseason FT% pans out usually, but if he keeps hitting at this clip his value shoots way up into near top 75 territory.  From watching some of the games, his form actually looks really good, has anyone heard anything about him working on that in the offseason?

would be really nice to be able to target this guy in a non punt draft

Yeah, there was an article I found over the offseason about how hard Asik was working on his offense, including free throw shooting, and it mentioned he had been shooting them at over 70% in practice.  That was obviously something to take with a grain of salt, and maybe still is, but the ft shooting this preseason has certainly been better, so I do think it's worth at least keeping an eye on.  Even just improving to 60% (instead of the projected 45%) would be huge for his 9 cat value.

EDIT: here's the link to that article: http://www.nba.com/rockets/news/trials-perspiration

Am I crazy to think that Asik will average 11 rpg/1spg/1.5 bpg? If he does that I'm going to be one happy camper.

i know that article's from a team page, so it's gonna lean towards the positive, but i'm really encouraged by that.  seems like the FT shooting is not just like a mental block the way it is with like Tiago Splitter and some other players, but more like he's never focused on it enough to get good.  very encouriging.

and ak, honestly, that line does not seem crazy to me at all...and if he keeps up the FTs he's like Joakim Noah for half the price

Well, he's getting paid to play and he's going to get a lot of minutes considering the Rockets' roster.

Could be a double double guy. If not, maybe an 8ppg and 10rpg at worst. With his style of play, and with his hustle, he's sure to average a good number of rebounds and blocks.

Deandre Jordan also retooled his shot, so far, like 35% from FT line no

Previous 2 seasons...best ft that Omer has ever hit was ONCE he went 3/4......every other time he was worse than that. In the preseason he has already had a couple 3/4 games...a something like 5/6...He has NEVER done that before---his whole life. So 70-74% FT seems realistic. Add to that---He is an incredible Def Rebounder and they have NO backup center--expect 35mins and 14rebs..

Omer Asik is gonna lead the league in rebounding.

70% is optimistic (and I've got him in 2 leagues) - I'd be perfectly happy with 65%

He's definitely beasting up the boards so far, not getting the blocks he's projected for

Hopefully when the season starts proper, he'll start producing them

I picked him up on 1 team this year, hoping he can provide prime Sam Dalembert-like stats, especially if he only takes 2 or less free throws per game.

1.7 FTA in 13.2 mpg to this point, don't count on that low volume. Everything he does on offense is at the rim.

i am hoping that since houston is looking like a weak team that we won't see a "hack-a-asik"

The rebounds keep coming in. I love Asik and his advanced rebounding numbers, and I think we can realistically expect this production on the boards all year long.

He's been awful at simply tipping the ball in or finishing right at the rim, which leads me to believe his FG% will go up as he becomes more comfortable when he's in position to score. He's missing point blank shots but that can't happen all season. He clearly doesnt have much confidence in his offensive game right now, but it's only up from here.

So happy with Asik this year.

how happy can you be?  he's like 220th overall in 9 cat per bbm

Like in so many instances, it depends on your league settings. I play H2H, rebs split into 2 cats, and I punt FTs. So he's pretty awesome.

i hear ya but i am pretty disappointed so far -- i expected bad ft% but the blocks are missing -- he has potential but it might be time to sell if he is still considered by someone a "hot" name

I think I know what you mean ferris, I was expecting something around 2bpg but was more concerned with securing him as a source of rebounds. Based on his play in Chicago the blocks should be there, I think it's just a matter of him adjusting to his teammates in Houston. He's an excellent defensive player and I think we'll see that as the season goes on.

Asik hasn't been very impressive so far but the great rebounding still makes him worth a bench stash and hope he can get his FG% and blocks up to where they should be.

So much for working on that FT shooting? 14-36 (39%) over the past eight games.

What happened to Asik's minutes? (And points?)

He was averaging 30+ minutes and 10 points.

Last three games:

24 / 10

24 / 0

20 / 6

Is Patrick Patterson eating into his minutes?

Foul trouble in two games and a matchup where the other team went very small in the other one.

Dropped him (punting BLKs so I was only holding on to try to deal him but no bites and I was sick of losing FT% and TO every week), which likely explains the 11-14 from the stripe so far tonight. Hoping it's not the free throw improvement finally coming to fruition.

he is so up and down, very hard to stomach as a fantasy owner but a heck of a lot of fun to watch on the court
