Hi guys,

I drafted Alonzo Gee as my last pick based on the speculation that he would be the starting Small Forward for the Cavs this year.  A few preseason games later, I noticed that Byron Scott seemed to favor starting C.J. Miles at the 3 spot instead of Gee and he seemed to be taking away his minutes (Miles minutes went up, Gee's minutes went down). So, I ended up picking up C.J. Miles because his BBM projections went up and I didn't mind having the extra scoring and 3PTM (I don't care that he jacks up a million shots because I'm punting FG%).

It seemed all good and well until tonight's preseason game where I saw Alonzo Gee starting at SF and getting a whopping 34 minutes.  He played well, 18 pts, 5 rebounds, and the all-around stats I expected of him when I initially drafted him (3 assists, 3 steals, 1 block).

C.J. Miles was suppose to start at Shooting Guard according to some news reports, but when I saw the boxscore, Dion Waiters ended up starting at the 2, and C.J. Miles came off the bench for only 22 minutes and 9 pts.

Now, I know I should take preseason games with a grain of salt, but I'm starting to second guess dropping Alonzo Gee.  I mean, I could keep C.J. Miles and also pick up Alonzo Gee, and instead drop Tristan Thompson (who also ended up coming off the bench this game for only 17 minutes and paltry stats).

I like Alonzo Gee - assuming he puts up the projected numbers; because of his decent rebounding, he gets to the free throw line (FTAs are a category in my league) and he plays defense.  But, I worry that he's gonna get relegated to the bench and overshadowed by Waiters and Miles, as he has most of the preseason.

I'm searching for wisdom from my fellow BBM members.

Well Tyler Zeller started over Tristan Thompson too, which as far as I know wasn't and isn't really expected to be the case in the season.

The thing to take away from it is that nothing is set in stone, even early in the season things could shift around.  2 of the 3 of Miles, Gee and Waiters will start, but which 2 is still not 100% certain.

I play Head-to-Head One Win (categories, most categories each week gets one win) - 11 categories are: PTS, 3 PTM, FG%, FT%, AST, STL, BLK, REB, DREB, FTA, A/T.

The way I've structured my team is to basically dominate with guard play (mostly point guard).  I'm very high on the guard categories (Assists, Steals, Free Throw Percentage, 3PTM, A/T Ratio) and also good in points.  I'm also decent in the rebounding categories, as I have David Lee, Kris Humphries, Ryan Anderson.  My weak points (punted categories) are blocks and FG%.

Now, what I've done with my bench is essentially add players that could supplement me in certain categories depending on my opponent for that week.  So, if I'm totally dominating going to dominate in points (my opponent doesn't have good scorers), but my opponent is close to me in rebounds, then I have guys on my bench that specialize in rebounds (Hickson and Tristan Thompson).  I can plug any one of those two guys in for my weaker rebounders on the team (I have flexibility because most of my players can play multiple positions, so I can move one over to accomodate one of these bench guys when needed).  I also have a few bench guys to add to my 3 Points Made (Jamal Crawford, CJ Miles, Dorell Wright), if I face an opponent who is close in 3 PTM ability.  I figure I could utilize these specialists as needed.

Now, if I drop Tristan Thompson, this means I lose one of my rebounders.  I could live without Thompson, but I'm wondering if people here believe that he can be a legimitate double-double guy.  Is 10 rebounds per game a real possibility with him this year?

Alonzo Gee could supplement as an all-around player that I could plug-in to balance my roster - he gives me decent point output, good rebounds for a small forward (about 5 per game), some steals and gets to the free throw line.  This is all assuming he gets his projected stats.

On the other hand, adding somebody like Byron Mullens might be better.  I used to have it, but I dropped him for Dorell Wright because Wright was killing it in preseason games.  But, I might still consider picking up Mullens.  If he could put up close to his preseason numbers, then I'm sold because he gives alot of 3 pointers for a big man (so, I can add rebounds without hurting my 3 PTM ability).  On the other hand, his BBM projected numbers aren't that great.  He only puts in about 5-6 rebounds based on projections (very poor for a big man) and he's not projected to get much points either.  Is it realistic to expect him to put 13-15 points a game and two 3 PTM per game?  How about his rebounds?  Can he get anywhere near 8 rebounds per game?  Is he a better bet than Tristan Thompson to produce?  What do you guys think Thompson will produce this year?

Thompson just doesn't put together the all-around game to be worth it if you're not punting FTs.  There's a reason he's last on your roster in projected value, and it's because he's a real drag on FT%, and really on all of the categories you need to win in your strategy, ranking last on your roster in assists, steals, a/to, and threes, too, and near the worst in points.  You can replace the rebounding elsewhere.

Well, my original plan was to only use Tristan Thompson if I was far dominant over my opponent in categories like FT%, where Thompson might hurt me.  In which case, I could afford the slight sacrifice in FT% if I needed some extra rebounds (if my opponent was a threat to lead me in rebounds).

Who would you suggest I get instead?

Amongst those available that are notable that I've considered:

- Byron Mullens C/PF

- Jarrett Jack PG

- Marvin Williams SF

- Alonzo Gee SF

- Hedo Turkoglu SF/PF

Basically, Mullens could provide me a hybrid center that can give good 3 PTM out of the position, but is a fairly poor rebounder coming out of the center spot.

Jarrett Jack seems intriguing as he's been doing really well in the preseason, but his value is tied to Stephen Curry's absence (which is a high possibility given his injury history).  On the other hand, it would be very hard for me to squeeze in another "only PG-eligible" player as I have my PG slot filled with Deron Williams, backup G Kyle Lowry and utility Jeremy Lin already filled.  Who would I replace to add his production out of those?  However, if Jack is expected to do well enough, then I would consider it.

I used to have Marvin Williams but I subsequently dropped him because I felt that he didn't really fill a need.  I got home mostly based on the potential that he might breakout with a surprise season.

I've told you about Alonzo Gee

Hedo Turkoglu is similiar to Gee, he provides versatility, all-around stats, I like the rebounding and assists that he brings out of the small forward spot, but I worry about his decreasing points lowering my scoring output.

I mainly got Tristan Thompson for his upside, the fact that he has potential and can be a breakout player this year.  He's also already a good rebounder.  If he's not going to get close to 10 rebounds, then I don't think he's worth keeping unless someone believes he can score at least 14ppg.

RW post quoting the Cleveland Plain-Dealer says Miles will come off the bench behind Gee. Starting 5 is Kyrie, Waiters, Gee, Thompson, Varejao.  I drafted Miles based on his BBM projection that assumed 32 MPG.  Does this news mean his value takes a sizeable hit?  RW blurb:

Alonzo Gee, and not C.J. Miles, will open the season as the Cavs starting small forward.

Gee's free agency took longer to play out than many expected, and some had thought that might cost him his starting job, but he was able to hold onto it entering the year. In that role last year, Gee averaged 11.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals on just 39.9 percent shooting.

No, Miles is the most inportant GF for this team, regardless of role. We've listed Gee as the starter throughout the preseason.

Buser is obv really high on Miles, and has been all preseason.

I don't see it personally.  I think this DOES mean CJ's value takes a hit, and I also think that he's just not that great a player really.  Utah had Hayward and....? as quality players at SG/SF last year, and still all CJ could put up was 9 points on 38% shooting.  The BBM projections basically project him at career highs in like very stat and in mpg and even in per minute production in some cases, and I just don't see it.  If he's not starting, I think you can look elsewhere for roster filler in standard sized leagues.

I drafted Miles with my last pick in a 12-team, 13 player,  8-category roto league this weekend.  I thought he might get the starting gig over Gee, but that's apparently not going to happen at the season's outset.  So now I'm thinking about dropping Miles and picking up either Chandler Parsons or Danny Green, who looks a lot more attractive now that Ginobili is already slated to miss the opener and is getting his back reevaluated on Thursday.  Plus, Green would greatly enhance the former-Tar Heel quotient of my team (always a concern for us Carolina alums cheerleader).  Does anybody have any cogent thoughts about what is, admittedly, the last spot on my roster and probably not that big a deal?  I'll hang up and listen.

I got CJ Miles mostly for his scoring.  He hasn't seen a shot he didn't like.  The guy just loves to shoot, he doesn't know what good shot selection is.  But as long as he scores points, I don't care because I'm punting FG% anyways.

He can still be a reasonably high scorer off the bench like Jamal Crawford and Ryan Anderson.  But will he get the minutes?

Chandler Parson's was availabe on the waiver wire up to last week in my league.  I was thinking of picking him up, but based on BBM projections, his numbers aren't much different from other available guys.  I can't decide which of his type I wanted to pick up.

dc, Corbin disliked Miles and the feeling was mutual. There was a lot more going on there than just his resulting line. Take a look at these career numbers (bkref):

Note the upward trend in FGA (before last season) and steady supply of combined 3/s/b. Highly motivated + huge opportunity = I'm buying at the price.

Matt,

Good luck with that, you can have him.  The declining fg% is still pretty offputting, and I don't think it's a given that he stays in Byron Scott's good graces if he couldn't work with Corbin.  Sure he shoots alot but on a mediocre 3pt% and what's become downright bad fg%.  Per 36s are fine until you realize he hasn't once in his 8 years played more than 25 mpg.  I'm just not seeing some kind of career year for him, especially since he's not even starting.

Actually really nice per36 numbers, can't see him shooting sub 40% again this year. In saying that CJ still looks like waiverwire fodder who you can plug in on a hotstreak...maybe Gee has better longterm upside this season if he can put things together.

Marvin Williams and Danny Green look like safer options, but maybe even Tobias Harris and James Johnson could be better flier picks?/

I think I'm gonna stick a fork in CJ Miles.  I know its early, and it's only one game, but he just played horrible and doesn't seem to getting enough opportunity anyways.

Plan on dropping him in both my leagues.

I don't blame them for giving him those projections, given that he was scoring at a high clip during the preseason.   But it's not likely that he'll get those results, as his minutes are diminishing.  When CJ Miles is out there, he takes alot of shots.  I personally think he's a horrible player that just forces it, but that never mattered to me if he shot the ball 30 times and only got 6 of them (punting FG% anyhow).  As long as he got the points for me, I was fine with it.  But, I highly doubt he's going to get 15 ppg now and he'll definitely not get the amount of 3 pointers that was originally in his projections.  I'm thinking more in line of closer to 10ppg max, but I'm guessing even less than that.
