With soooo much hype surround Cousins and his expected break-out season, just wondering what everyone realistically expects? We know his potential is through the roof, but what what are his chances of achieving this? In roto, where would you take him, compared to safer (albeit less exciting) picks like Pau (who might score and rebound less, but has solid %s and assists) or Greg Monroe? Interesting to hear your thoughts

I'm very high on cousins this year for a number of reasons. Defensively he's going to give you good numbers and they should go up with his improved fitness. He is unquestionably the go to guy on offense and virtually no competition for his spot. I'm always high on players that spent the summer training with the Olympic squad and he must have felt snubbed to have Anthony Davis selected over him. all signs point to a monster year, as long as he keeps those fouled down. I'm picking him ahead of both Monroe and gasol

Through the first 3 games he's putting up 15.3/8 with 2.3spg and 1bpg on dreadful percentages. First two games were clunkers but had a beast performance on 11/3.

I know the scoring and boards will go up, but how are Cousins owners feeling right now after a slow start? Anyone thinking about selling or is his potential too freakish to let go?

Too freakish to let go. In his first two games he only played 25 min each, which I'll assume is due to foul trouble since I didn't watch the games. Going 2OT vs IND helped his numbers last game (42 min).

I was offered Al Jefferson for Cousins (with some fillers on each side, I forget) and couldn't do it just because I knew that I would regret it down the road once he starts putting up those crazy lines of his.

Very interested to see what he can do against GS tonight. Last year, he averaged 22p/16r/2a/1.3s/1.8b in 4 games against the Warriors. New season, new rosters, but I'll be happy if he's even close to those splits.

Blaspemy or not, I thought Cousins pushing first round value was pretty unrealistic. I recognize that his main problem with FG% being too many missed tip ins but has he really solved that problem yet? He also hasn't been a strong shot blocker plus the high turnovers and lackluster FT%. I've been wondering if Cousins actually harnesses his talent that will he be a guy that's more valuable in real life than fantasy ala Blake Griffin? Currently, he pretty much needs to take Shaq's advise and just up 28/12.

I had the opportunity to draft him at 32 in a draft but opted for Lowry instead so not like this is a knee jerk reaction to small sample size. Mid-late 3rd was where I had him.

Averaging 17.3p/9.8r with 2.3s/1.3b through 4 games, but has put up 22/14 over the last 2. That's what I want to see! Hoping the beast numbers continue, he was a menace against GS's soft post.

Do you think he'll keep it up this week against DET, SAS, and LAL?

@GP - advice from the guy who said Robin (or rather, Brook) Lopez was one of the two best centers in the NBA? No thanks.

Look, it's fairly obvious to say that DMC posting first-round value this year is a bit of a stretch. Is it unlikely to happen? Yes. But would I be surprised if it did? Absolutely not. I can only count a few players on one hand who possess that type of ceiling and immense potential to where they're able to overcome sizable categorical deficiences and be strong fantasy assets. DMC managed to do that last year, going from 214th in per-game value to 54th. I disagree with GP completely when putting him in a boat with Blake Griffin. That FT% alone likely means BG will never be ranked inside the top-40 in overall impact. There's a defined ceiling there. That doesn't apply to Cousins. Keep in mind that DMC took that leap last year when he was only 21 (!!!), about 6-7 years of where players traditionally peak. He's just getting started, getting past those maturity issues that have held him back.

Take a second here and step back from the four-game sample and look at the bigger picture. What you've seen in preseason or in four games has very little significance. The career arc is pretty clear, and whether he does it this year or next, he's right on the precipice of being a sure-fire, first-round player. Buser and I talked about this coming in and we both agree that it isn't particularly close between he and Monroe, that we'd take DMC over Monroe in a ROTO format without question. To answer the OP - you rank them Pau (Rd 1/2 turn), Cousins (Rd 2/3 turn), Monroe (mid-Rd3).

@ak - hope you caught some of the Lakers bludgeoning on Sunday. Cousins should feast on this frontcourt on Wednesday. Among bigs, Monroe is really one of the worst defenders in the league. 20/10/1 should be a given, and he should have a shot at 25/15/2.

Wow justin, I hope you're right about Cousins smashing DET. I'm really hoping he can rattle off a streak of strong double-doubles and get into a groove during the early season. Any kind of consistency is what I'm hoping to see, I know he'll have a few headache games but if they're few and far between then it won't be hard to live with.

Looking up the splits from last year, he went for 20/11 with modest steals and blocks in 2 games against DET. Who checks Cousins when Monroe is not on the floor? Maxiell? Drummond?

DeMarcus Cousins, who is averaging 16.0 points and 9.5 rebounds this season, admitted that he is struggling with his confidence.

"I've been terrible," he said. "We're losing. I don't feel like I made improvements from last year. I really don't have any confidence at all. I'm just trying to think my way through it, but right now, I'm not finding anything."

There's a line in the sand that separates whether or not you're cut out to be a Cousins owner. If you can deal with constant headaches and disappointment throughout the season, then you have what it takes and you will also reap the benefits. If not, it's only gonna get worse and you're going to be very unhappy all year long.

At first I metaphorized Cousins as bad cough medicine -- tastes terrible going down but you know it can help you. But really, he's more of a Cheeseburger -- you know he's loaded with artery clogging cholesterol and he's bad for your health, but damnit you just want him anyway. You don't always feel good after eating the cheeseburger, but in the future the idea of a juicy burger is gonna tempt you again and again.

Probably a blessing in disguise for most Cousins owners anyway as he's been a huge drain on your FG and TO this year. I just dealt him for Bosh in a dynasty. I've watched Cousins closely for three seasons now and he's not going to become a 20-10 big IMO. He's too immature and entitled to develop his game to that point. Expect low FG%, high TOs and wildly inconsistent play for the foreseeable future.

Goodluck Kings for any chance DMC now staying there with DF.

DeMarcus Cousins has also fired his agent John Greig to go with Dan Fegan

Fegan is one of the most powerful agents in the NBA, and his most recent high-profile situation is the very sort of scenario the Kings – and every other team, for that matter – would like to avoid. Fegan was instrumental in Dwight Howard's exodus from Orlando to the Lakers last summer, having presented the Magic with a list of teams (Brooklyn, Dallas, and the Lakers) to which Howard was willing to re-sign if traded. Fegan's last extensive dealings with the Kings were in 2009, and they were far from positive for either side.

Marc Stein: Since DeMarcus Cousins trade speculation is sure to be Twitter's new favorite sport, one team I'm sure will put in a call: Pat Riley's Heat

Clearly the Kings felt his apology was not enough this time around. And it appears that his behavior and actions are beginning to wear thin. “Deeds become important now,” said the Kings head coach when asked if Cousins’ continued apologies still hold credibility. “It’s not so much words. And I think that’s where you’re trying to get him or any person to get (to understand) the deeds of it. Because everyone will see your deeds and then there will be more believability there than just words you’re saying.”

As talented as Cousins clearly is, the early assessment of his value around the league – at least at the moment – is that it's on the serious decline. Teams known to have significant interest in Cousins in the past were Detroit, Houston, and Denver, though even the most ardent fans of his game have admitted his latest incident would cause concern. Because no one in the Kings organization has been a bigger supporter of Cousins than Smart, his decision to treat his coach in such a disrespectful way marked a new low for the player whose career has been marred by incidents such as these.

The Kings had been strongly advising the volatile Cousins to begin seeing a mental health counselor, but a person with knowledge of the situation said he refused to do so. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the matter.

IN DMC's defense once it became public they wanted him to see a shrink he had no choice but to refuse. Maybe anger management classes would be more in order. Maybe some empathy classes with him caring for puppies and kitties would mellow him out. Forcing him to a psychiatrist couch would have been a good idea if they had kept their mouths shut. This suspending him a game or 2 is not working at all. I hope Sacramento has a Plan B in mind for his next suspension.

DeMarcus Cousins was reinstated from his suspension and practiced on Monday, but Keith Smart wouldn't commit to playing him on Wednesday.

"He's been reinstated, yes, but that doesn't mean that he's playing right away," said Smart. "But he's back around the team and came back today and apologized to the team [and] to me as well and we'll just move forward."

DeMarcus Cousins didn't travel with the Kings to Portland for Wednesday's game.
The team said it was coach Keith Smart's decision to leave Cousins behind. The news comes only a day after a source told beat writer Jason Jones that Cousins was likely to play Wednesday as long as he apologized. It remains to be seen whether this will extend beyond Wednesday's game, but something tells us this whole mess is a long way from being over.

Smart acts like a hall of fame coach with a respected dossier. DMC acts like his effort is to be parcelled out as he sees fit. What I don't see is DMC being traded to a good team why reward him?

HF, dont hold any breath DMC staying overthere... DF will have amusement when "negotiating" about new contract begins,

they (Kings) screwed him up in 2010 draft when they got change of mind passing up Rubio (they have agreement at first to pick Ricky, DF its his agent also) and getting Tyreke insted of him, just wait and see, will be hell of fun when that times come, he will demend a max one for that headcase (atleast from Kings).

Monitoring when Cousins plays is one thing. The relationship between and Cousins and Smart is something else to watch.

Smart made progress in building a relationship with Cousins after the center's strained relationship with Paul Westphal. Once Cousins didn't trust Westphal, it didn't matter what the coach said, he'd lost Cousins.

So Smart did all he could to build a bond. He visited Cousins at home. Got to know him on a personal level and tried to get to know Cousins as a person, not just a player.

Smart has to be wary of the same situation Westphal dealt with. Not that he'll be fired, as Westphal was after his final spat with Cousins. But with the Kings at 9-19 the locker room is already on edge after every loss.

Add an important and angry player to that, the mix could be toxic.

According to former Kings beat writer Sam Amick, DeMarcus Cousins' reinstatement from suspension on Dec. 24 was "made unilaterally by the team's owners and went against the wishes and planned protocol of the team's front office."
Keith Smart was informed of the decision but was later "allowed" to bench Cousins for Wednesday's game, while GM Geoff Petrie, who has been with the Kings for 19 years, "was not a key part of the reinstatement process." Roughly speaking, this leaves us with a disgruntled (to be kind) franchise player who is being pressured to take the team's suggestion that he see a psychiatrist, a puppet coach whose rotations and game management defy logic, a GM who is reduced to a cipher now at the most critical junctures (and who is "all but certain" to leave the team after the season), and a pair of nouveau-broke millionaire owners who are trying to sell the Kings at an above-value price of $500 million on the pretext that a new owner could move it to a more lucrative mark.

The Kings have denied they’re trying to trade center DeMarcus Cousins, a true talent as both a player and a trouble spot. But multiple sources who claim to have taken their calls said that’s not true, that Cousins is actually on the market. The asking price, however, “is way too high right now,” said one opposing GM.

Yesterday, USA Today reported that Sacramento is attempting to deal Demarcus Cousins, but there is a split between management and ownership on the deal. The management of Sacramento believes a trade would be best for both parties, while ownership is hoping to get more for their most prized asset. Today KSR has spoken with a source close to Demarcus Cousins both that confirms trade talks are ongoing and Cousins is hoping a deal will be worked out soon. According to the source, the four teams that are most likely to end up making such a deal for cousins are Boston, Dallas, Orlando and Charlotte. The USA Today story reported that Detroit, Houston and Washington are also potential destinations, but the source tells KSR that Cousins has been told those are all unlikely for a variety of reasons.

When a team is on the market like New Orleans last year the franchise value is the only goal. I would not be surprised if Stern and the other owners take over the team from the Maloofs. Shinn kinda got hosed when the league took over his Hornets. First the NBA floated "loans" to Shinn to operate the franchise. Then after a while used the loans Shinn had spent to upkeep the franchise, was used to "buy" him out. So the bulk of the money Shinn got from the NBA was already spent money used to upkeep the now property of the NBA? I don't know how Shinn's lawsuit is coming but he should win very easy. The Maloofs will not take this path. If the NBA buys the Kings it will cost market value plus a share of whatever the future buyer pays. MLB can force a bad owner (Schott) to sell but they have an antitrust exemption in place. The Maloofs do need to sell. Not paying another coach while paying Smart is why he is still the coach.

-Any chance the Jazz end up with Cousins? I think Jefferson needs to go and Millsap would be better served coming off the bench, otherwise, he should go, too? What moves should the Jazz be looking to make?

Chad Ford:Cousins is crazy talented and from what I can gather, he wants out of Sacramento badly. The Jazz have a ton of different assets to offer. But I can't imagine any scenario where the Jazz would give up any of those assets for Cousins. They care a lot about both character and chemistry. They aren't the type of team that will take the risk? Boston? For sure they would. Dallas? They would too. Just not Utah.

I really doubt DMC is traded. No matter what package they would receive, overall the franchise value is greater with him. When a team is for sale that is the only factor. The only reason Smart is so safe is because the Maloofs do not want to pay Smart not to coach.

I wouldn't read much into that, as consensus is that Sacramento is the sticking point, not anything Boston would or would not do. This rumor is most certainly coming out of Boston without much substantiation.

----------

Can't tell you definitively DeMarcus Cousins isn't going to Boston (USA Today's Sam Amick has), but I know Jarvis Varnado and Kris Joseph were destined to be waived regardless of any trade talk because the Celtics have no desire to pay luxury tax on their contracts, which they risked doing if the deals became guaranteed. None of the league contacts I've spoken with have indicated Cousins is available, and if you're the Kings and moving your biggest asset, wouldn't you want to find out exactly what you can get for him? The other issue, and not a small one, is that Cousins only makes $3.8 million. While the Kings have cap space, they have absolutely no interest in filling it, which means Cousins would have to be packaged with John Salmons ($8m, $7.5m) or Marcus Thornton ($7.6m, $8.1m, $8.6m) just to do a deal for, say, Jeff Green and Avery Bradley. What sense does that make? The only tantalizing possibility is if Celtics GM Danny Ainge finally goes through with his annual Rondo trade dalliance, but he'd need to get back a PG and I'm just not sure Aaron Brooks, Bradley, Pierce, KG and Cousins gets you farther in the postseason than Rondo, Bradley, Pierce, Green/Bass/Sullinger, KG.

wacko goes on and on and on... no end with his idiocy.

The Sacramento Kings center was ejected at halftime Monday night during a 98-91 overtime loss to the Utah Jazz. He approached referee Tre Maddox and proceeded to get in his ear about something, then was ejected by referee Scott Foster after apparently crossing some sort of line. The ejection came because it was Cousins' second technical foul of the game, his first coming with 2 minutes, 23 seconds to go before the half. "Cousins said he told the ref not to act like a 'bleeping female' to get his second tech," Sacramento Bee beat reporter Jason Jones tweeted, later clarifying the tweet was the censored, family-friendly version. "I shouldn't have said that," Cousins said of the curse word. "That's about it." This blowup was particularly inexplicable. Both teams had retreated to their locker rooms, but Cousins felt the need to say something. Maddox seemed to ignore him, though he made the decision to walk over to the other referees. "I think there was conversation on both sides and the referee got to the point where he didn't want to hear any more," Kings coach Keith Smart said. "The part where it is halftime and you're walking toward them, you will probably always get in trouble doing that."

Next thing you know, he starts barking at me. And we try to run a play and he elbows me in the head. So I don't know." More from Dunleavy... "Yeah he came up and confronted me about whatever and was like - (he's) just always talking. He's always running his mouth. He just, you know, should leave people alone."

Jason Thompson had a great line as reporters bombarded him with DeMarcus Cousins questions tonight... “You can give a person as much advice as you can, from us, to coaches, to Hall of Famers, to whatever, but at the end of the day, you’re in this league because you are a grown man and you’re going to do what you want to do.” –Jason Thompson on the continuing issues with Cousins.
