Active Left calf Open link
Butler will be active and in the starting lineup for Saturday's game vs. the 76ers. He sat out of Thursday's win due to a left calf injury, although it was considered minor and does not appear to be anything that will limit him moving forward. Butler presumably suffered the injury during Wednesday's loss, though it's unclear how it happened. His return Saturday will take back minutes on the wing from Tony Snell, Mike Dunleavy, and Nikola Mirotic.

Out Left calf Open link
Butler has been ruled out for Thursday's game vs. the Heat due to a left calf injury. This one came out of nowhere as there were no previous reports that he was dealing with a calf issue heading in. Butler presumably suffered the injury during Wednesday's loss, though it's unclear how it happened. His absence will open up more minutes on the wing for Tony Snell, Mike Dunleavy, and Nikola Mirotic.

Active Sprained left elbow Open link
Butler will play and start on Monday vs. the Hornets barring a setback in pre-game warmups. He has been a full participant in recent practices, with Thibodeau saying on multiple occasions that he's been "getting closer" to a return. Butler is exactly three weeks into the initial three-to-six week timetable given after suffering a Grade 2-3 ulnar ligament sprain and small bone impaction injury to his left elbow earlier in the month. His likely return will cut further into the minutes of Tony Snell and Mike Dunleavy on the wing.

Butler was a full participant in practice on Thursday, and is "getting closer" to a return according to coach Tom Thibodeau. We're considering him questionable for now in advance of Friday's game vs. the Raptors, though the Chicago Tribune's KC Johnson is guessing he won't be back until Saturday or Monday. Butler is just over two weeks into an initial three-to-six week timetable after suffering a Grade 2-3 ulnar ligament sprain and small bone impaction injury to his left elbow earlier in the month. Tony Snell and Mike Dunleavy would continue to see the minutes at small forward should he be held out again on Friday.

Butler was a full participant in practice on Tuesday and it appears that he is getting close to a return. Coach Tom Thibodeau called him day-to-day and is hopeful that he'll be able to play this week, with Friday's game vs. the Raptors a real possibility. Butler is just over two weeks into an initial three-to-six week timetable after suffering a Grade 2-3 ulnar ligament sprain and small bone impaction injury to his left elbow earlier in the month. Tony Snell and Mike Dunleavy will continue to see the minutes at small forward for at least one more game on Wednesday in his place.

Injured Sprained left elbow Open link
Coach Tom Thibodeau said Butler is not yet practicing and is doing a lot of shooting instead. He added that he is getting closer to a return, though he isn't sure exactly when that will be. Butler is now two weeks into an initial three-to-six week timetable after suffering a Grade 2-3 ulnar ligament sprain and small bone impaction injury to his left elbow earlier in the month. March 23 (when the Bulls play the Hornets at home) would mark exactly three weeks, and that still seems like a realistic target for Butler at this point given the team plays in a back-to-back before that on March 20-21. Tony Snell and Mike Dunleavy will continue to see the minutes at small forward for as long as he remains sidelined.

Butler is "getting closer" to a return according to coach Tom Thibodeau, and it's possible that he could return earlier than his initial three-to-six week timetable. He is currently a week in, and March 23 (when the Bulls play the Hornets at home) would mark exactly three weeks. That seems like a realistic target for Butler at this point given the team plays in a back-to-back before that on March 20-21. He was diagnosed with a Grade 2-3 ulnar ligament sprain and small bone impaction injury to his left elbow earlier in the month, and his return will depend on how his elbow responds to rest and treatment. Tony Snell, Mike Dunleavy, and Nikola Mirotic will see the minutes at small forward for the Bulls for as long as Butler remains sidelined.

Injured Sprained left elbow Open link
Butler has been diagnosed with a Grade 2-3 ulnar ligament sprain and small bone impaction injury to his left elbow. He won't need surgery, but is expected to miss three-to-six weeks depending on how his elbow responds to rest and treatment. Butler will be evaluated on a weekly basis and could be back before that three-week mark, but that seems highly unlikely at this point. He suffered the injury during Sunday's loss while running into a screen from DeAndre Jordan, and was in apparent discomfort on the bench before eventually heading to the locker room. Tony Snell, Mike Dunleavy, and Nikola Mirotic will see the minutes at small forward for the Bulls for as long as Butler remains sidelined.

Questionable Hyperextended left elbow Open link
Butler did not return to Sunday's loss after suffering a hyperxtended left elbow early in the third quarter while running into a screen from DeAndre Jordan. He was in apparent discomfort and received treatment on the bench from the Bulls' trainer before eventually heading to the locker room. Coach Tom Thibodeau said afterwards that Butler will undergo an MRI on Monday. We'll continue to update Butler's status once the results come back, and Tony Snell, Kirk Hinrich, and Mike Dunleavy would see additional run on the wing if he has to sit out Tuesday.

Active Strained right shoulder Open link
Butler was a full participant in practice on Wednesday and will play on Friday vs. the Pistons. He has been on track to play for some time now with the All-Star break giving him extended time off to get his strained right shoulder right. Butler first suffered the strain last Sunday, then aggravated it during the first half of Tuesday's win and was held out on Thursday. His return will take back minutes at small forward from Tony Snell and Nikola Mirotic.

Probable Strained right shoulder Open link
Butler played a team-low nine minutes for the Eastern Conference All-Stars on Sunday but said afterward that his shoulder felt good and he expects to be in the lineup for Friday's game vs. the Pistons. "I wish I were 100 percent healthy so I could do a lot more," said Butler. "But it was fun." He went through a light practice on Saturday and said that he didn't expect his shoulder to be an issue following the break in any case. Butler felt good after a light practice on Saturday and remains optimistic that he'll be able to play in Sunday's All-Star game, although he said he'd wait until Sunday before making a final decision. He said Friday that he does not expect his strained right shoulder to be an issue following the break in any case. He first suffered the injury back on Sunday, then aggravated it during the first half of Tuesday's win and was held out on Thursday. Coach Tom Thibodeau said Thursday that Butler was still dealing with some soreness, though he also didn't seem too concerned about it and added that Butler would likely participate in All-Star weekend. The Bulls' next regular season game takes place on Feb. 20.

Coach Tom Thibodeau said Butler is still dealing with some soreness, though he didn't seem too concerned about it and added that Butler is still likely to participate in All-Star weekend. Questionable Strained right shoulder Open link
Coach Tom Thibodeau said an MRI on Butler's right shoulder confirmed that he has a strain. Butler didn't practice on Wednesday and is listed as questionable ahead of Thursday's game vs. the Cavs. He did not return for the second half on Tuesday after an ineffective 22 minutes (2-8 FG), and Thibodeau said he's still dealing with some soreness. Butler originally suffered the injury during the first half of Sunday's win, and it does not appear that he aggravated it during any one particular play on Tuesday. Tony Snell, Mike Dunleavy, E'Twaun Moore, and Doug McDermott would see additional run on the wing if Butler is eventually ruled out for Thursday.

Butler won't return for the second half of Tuesday's game due to an aggravation of his strained right shoulder. He originally suffered the injury during the first half of Sunday's win, although he returned with no reported issues and was not listed on the Bulls' injury report for Tuesday. Butler's absence in the second half will open up minutes on the wing for Tony Snell, Mike Dunleavy, E'Twaun Moore, and Doug McDermott.

Active Right shoulder Open link
Butler started the second half of Sunday's game after briefly heading to the locker room late in the second quarter. He was favoring his right shoulder after tweaking it during a play where he committed a charging foul on Victor Oladipo. Butler appears to still be in a bit of discomfort, and we'll continue to keep an eye on his status and provide updates as needed.
1/30/2015 8:04 PM
Active Left knee contusion Open link
Butler will play on Friday vs. the Suns despite dealing with a left knee contusion. He was considered probable heading in and was never in any real danger of missing time given his propensity to play through any and all minor ailments. Butler left Thursday's loss towards the end of the second overtime after getting hit on the knee, and was moving with a pronounced limp before the team intentionally fouled to get him out of the game.

Probable Left knee contusion Open link
Butler is listed as probable for Friday's game vs. the Suns with a left knee contusion. He left Thursday's loss towards the end of the second overtime after getting hit on the knee, and was moving with a pronounced limp before the team intentionally fouled to get him out of the game. Butler tends to play through any and all minor ailments, and that is what this appears to be, so it's not looking like it will cost him any time moving forward.

Questionable Left knee Open link
Butler left Thursday's loss towards the end of the second overtime after getting his in his left knee. He tweaked his knee when he stepped on someone's foot, and was limping before the team intentionally fouled so that he could be removed from the game. Butler said he is unsure about his availability for Friday's game vs. the Suns, though it wouldn't be a surprise to see him play as he's been known to play through minor injuries. We'll continue to update his status as we hear more, and are considering him questionable for now.
1/29/2015 12:07 PM
Active Illness Open link
Coach Tom Thibodeau said Butler will return to the lineup on Thursday vs. the Lakers after a one-game absence due to illness. His presence will mean fewer minutes on the wing for Kirk Hinrich, Tony Snell, and E'Twaun Moore.

Out Illness Open link
Butler has been ruled out for Tuesday's game vs. the Warriors due to illness. His absence leaves the Bulls particularly thin on the wing, with Mike Dunleavy still sidelined due to his ankle injury. Butler missed morning shootaround due to illness and is questionable for Tuesday's game vs. the Warriors. Butler's absence could leave the Bulls particularly thin on the wing, with Mike Dunleavy having been declared out due to his ankle injury. Butler will not play vs. the Celtics on Saturday, as he is away from the team for bereavement leave. The Bulls will be very thin on the wing on Saturday, with Mike Dunleavy (ankle) having also been ruled out, and it will mean expanded roles for Tony Snell, Kirk Hinrich, and E'Twaun Moore. Coach Tom Thibodeau said that he expects Butler to return for the Bulls' next game, Monday vs. the Rockets.

Butler missed shootaround for personal reasons, but is with the team and is expected to play on Monday vs. the Pacers. We'll continue to update his status as needed in the off chance that he ends up having to sit out on Monday, but it seems unlikely that this will end up costing him any time.

Active Sprained left thumb Open link
Butler will return to the starting lineup on Saturday according to Bulls' play-by-play announcer Chuck Swirsky. He took part in Friday's shootaround after participating in a four-on-four scrimmage on Thursday, and reports were that he was "dribbling freely with both hands" and shooting jump shots. It looks like he's progressed enough since to return to game action. Kirk Hinrich, Mike Dunleavy, and Tony Snell will all see a cut in minutes with Butler's return.

Injured Sprained left thumb Open link
Butler participated in Friday shootaround but is not in the starting lineup for the Bulls on Friday. Butler did participate in a four-on-four scrimmage on Thursday and reports are that he was "dribbling freely with both hands" and shooting jumpshots, but his thumb was heavily taped and it looks like the Bulls aren't going to push things. Kirk Hinrich will get another start, with Mike Dunleavy, Doug McDermott, and Tony Snell to also see additional minutes. We're considering Butler doubtful for Saturday, as well.

Injured Sprained left thumb Open link
Shortly after saying that Butler was expected to miss two-to-four weeks while his left thumb heals, coach Tom Thibodeau softened his stance, saying that it's likely one-to-three weeks and from the time of the original injury. Butler is now 10 days removed from the sprain and had just progressed to dribbling with his left hand on Tuesday, but Butler himself said Wednesday that he's "hoping" to play as soon as Friday. Put it all together and there's zero clarity, so for now we'll assume that Butler is out through the weekend, putting his timetable at just under three weeks since the initial injury, and we'll look for further updates as the Bulls provide them. Kirk Hinrich will start at shooting guard while Butler misses games, with Mike Dunleavy, Doug McDermott, and Tony Snell to also see additional run on the wing.
10/28/2014 2:20 PM
Questionable Sprained left thumb Open link
Butler has been testing his sprained left thumb a bit more with each day, and he progressed to dribbling with his left hand during workouts on Tuesday, although he did not participate in the team's practice. He remains questionable for Wednesday's season opener, with his official status to come down to a game-time decision. "My thumb has to be able to hold up, and not re-injure myself," said Butler. "I think obviously everyone knows I want to play, but I don’t want to rush back too early." Kirk Hinrich would start at shooting guard if Butler were to miss any games, with Mike Dunleavy, Doug McDermott, and Tony Snell to also see additional run on the wing.

Questionable Sprained left thumb Open link
Butler has yet to return to practice but did some work on the court on Sunday, including shooting. He's officially day-to-day and we're not expected to hear his status for Wednesday's season opener for a few more days. Butler currently has a splint on his thumb and has been generally optimistic about the injury, given that the sprain could have been something much worse. Mike Dunleavy, Doug McDermott, Kirk Hinrich, and Tony Snell would see additional run on the wing for the Bulls should he be forced to miss any games to start the season.

He will not practice this week and has been ruled out for the Bulls' preseason finale on Friday, then will be re-evaluated after that. Butler currently has a splint on his thumb and recently said he is optimistic about the injury. He suffered the sprain while deflecting a pass on defense in the first quarter of Sunday's exhibition and did not return. Mike Dunleavy, Doug McDermott, Kirk Hinrich, and Tony Snell would see additional run on the wing for the Bulls should he be forced to miss any additional time.
