I dropped him for Willy.H. Val doesnt get stocks to help soften the blow when his usage is down. He has literally no upside and I cant see the addition of Ibaka doing anything good except draining some more usage.

@dl22 He finished the season 61 in roto 9 cats 2 years ago and 52 last season. Somebody could think wit legitimacy that he may end up top 40 this year. Fortunately for me, I didn't think that he could at all.

Moving forward to future seasons, can we please stop the mantra of "this is finally the year JV gets minutes and breaks out!" and arbitrarily ranking him in the top 40. He is who he is; capable of feasting on teams that play a poor opposing big man, usually gets benched against 70% of the NBA that goes small.

Unless you're struggling to make playoffs, I would hold 2-3 games and see how he plays with Ibaka. There's a chance Ibaka's defense covers up JV a bit and they work well in tandem. As for trading, see if you can find a manager who is desperate for a C and try to get a decent G or F in return (Tyler Johnson, Gallinari, TJ Warren, T. Ross if you're desperate). Each of those players are in the neighborhood of rankings with JV.

So, I think last night is a telltale sign moving forward. JV plays 5 minutes in the third, and 0 in the fourth. The front court of Ibaka, Carroll and Tucker is clearly productive and preferred. Josh says we may need to eventually consider a drop. I'm feeling like I'm there now. Especially with Chriss, Mirotic, Holmes and Zubac out there.

I don't think this will change much, maybe one or two minutes less per game as they can do a little more small ball. I think Sullinger needs to be traded. But I also think there is a chance they will try to trade JV. He doesn't fit into the team's scheme defensively at all (he is terrible at switching onto perimeter players). Sullinger would have to show some signs of life though. They do need someone who can rebound.

Oh boy he has been really bad this year. He has been even worse than his previous seasons and everyone was expecting a break out. And it's not entirely the coach's fault or don't the Raptors want to win games? Or isn't Casey a successful coach? It's easy always to blame the coach, but here we don't have an amazing talent like Jokic. Val doesn't have a great ball IQ. Where are his blocks, where is his effort? It just seems he isn't THAT good.

@theo156 My league is extremely competitive (believe me). 16 team deep, 12 cat roto. Yes quantity doesn't necessarily equate to quality but like in the NBA, not every coach/manager is top level. Does that undermine the level of competitiveness of the league as a whole?

Peter Porker -- In a 10-team league, I could see a situation where someone who is better than Valanciunas (for your team build) becomes available on the wire. I'd keep him for his percentages in rotisserie leagues, but in a H2H league, I'd look to trade him if you want to get rid of him. Don't drop him. He has enough value/name value to get back something that should fit your team better.

Agree 100% with canowhoop. Don't drop him, rather look for a trade. Matter of fact, that's exactly what I did, traded him for Myles Turner (mainly because I folowed the advice given by many of you guys).

Don't drop Jonas, he'll start producing at some point soon, even if he's only getting minutes in the mid 20's. If you can't justify holding him, it would be much more beneficial to try trade him for someone that's not just waiver wire fodder. Do what you think is best, but dropping JVal isn't advisable.

Can't believe I'm writing this, but it's starting to get hard holding on to him in 10-teamers when he can be dropped for a streaming spot. Only 5 standout positive Z-scores so far this year. He doesn't fit Casey's defensive schemes; Bebe is much better in that regard and will continue to get steady burn. (This doesn't even factor in Sully, who might steal a few minutes if he comes back and plays well.) He will still get around 25-28 minutes moving forward, but I think his ceiling is pretty capped at this point. On the verge of dropping for hot pickups. Up to move ahead with this plan, down to walk back from the cliff.

He's not going to play 35+ minutes a game. That's not my expectation, but I for sure think he plays more than Bebe this year. Even with jv picking up 2 quick fouls he played 29 minutes tonight. I'm very confident he will play in the 28-32 minute range this year, which is enough time for him to be a strong fantasy asset

I think we may have different definitions of a timeshare. A timeshare to me is Boston's PF spot. Amir, Kelly, Jonas all splitting the minutes. In Toronto, JV is the starter and he is getting bulk of the minutes. He played less in blowouts and a bad Cavs matchup (in which JV played 25 compared with Bebe's 15).
138.4d
G00S3
@dl22, yep I agree with that assessment. Hopefully tonight's line will calm some worries surrounding JV. Will be interesting to see how Sully's return changes things.

It's a match-up based timeshare, that's it, no further speculation needed. JV saw a dip in minutes due to blow-outs and foul trouble recently, otherwise it's just a timeshare.

I disagree. Sure, Bebe is great at what he does, but he's a clear offensive liability and doesn't offer any more defensive spacing than JV does. JV is without a doubt our best big, so I envision the majority of minutes at the 5 will go to him. In fact, I think Sullinger's return will hurt Bebe more, but who knows with Casey. I'm understandably biased with Raps being my hometown team, so maybe others can chime in here, but I wouldn't be too worried with JV right now. Just seems like a poor run of form/matchups to me.

My concern with Valanciunas is that Nogueira might just be too good not to play. Would you want to be invested in the guy starting in front of 2014-2015 Hassan Whiteside? I wouldn't. Could easily see Valanciunas' minutes staying below the mid-20s as Nogueira builds trust with the coaching staff.

gehrenberg that mostly holds true, but the minute fluctuation and the recent comments does suggest that the avg min/g might be closer to the 28 or lower, especially when you look at how his min/g trended down each of the past 3 years. either way, the min differential compounds the problem with projection to actual because his pt/36 and blk/36 are so much lower than what you project

Basically he had one bad game that could be attributed to a matchup which was against cavs who have been one of the NBAs better teams at defending centers over the last couple years. Then look at the game log and you will see JV played big minutes in all games that weren't double digit blowouts

No I think it's bad blurb on roto world. The scores of recent games is really being overlooked in terms of his recent playing time. They had four completely non competitive games in a row. In regards to the "funk" stemming from the Cavs game: the Cavs are a terrible matchup for us. The fact that Frye/Love can hit the three makes both Bebe and JV huge liabilities. I have to admit, I'm not feeling the big bump this year either. Casey plays maddening rotations with a lot of small ball. It wasn't like Biyombo was taking JV minutes, it seemed to be more match-up/small ball line ups meant Casey went away from him. His Olympics didnt instill much more confidence either Im not reaching for him again in the hope Casey gives him 4-5 min extra a game.

Over his last 50 games, he has blocked 3.0 shots per 100 possessions and we currently have him projected for less than that actually, so while it is an increase over what he did for the entirety of last season, it's actually less than what he did to close out the second half of the year
203.1d
bk33
I agree with his projected increase in minutes/usage/scoring, however the big bump in blocks? That's not who he is and that's not how Dwane Casey runs his defensive schemes. JV might be getting some of Biyombo's minutes but he sure will not be getting his motor.
